  • Question about grappling arts in general.

first of all, sorry if this is the wrong forum for this

But my question was, in grappling/throwing arts, do you recieve training on how to defend vs./counter punches, kicks, and strikes in general? Or only how to counter vs. other grapples/holds?

Also, i was more interested in a grappling art that was not as ground-focused as bjj. I was considering judo. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Most grappling places will teach you a bit about strikers. Aikido trains excusivley in how to defend against sriking attackers, but IMO they train like babies and don't learn anything practical. BJJ and Judo should include some ground striking or striking defence but I find that it is usually grappling exclusive, though my BJJ place is and MMA place and it also includes Muay Thai, so we get out regemen of striking skills in.

Judo is helpful for takedowns, and basic submissions, but obviously it is Gi oriented. Round it off with some no Gi takedowns and submissions and thats very valid.

yeh because when you want to attack someone on the beach Gi techniques are useless...

You better watch what you say about aikido, buddy. I have half a mind to challenge you to a throw-down.

I might not be able to defend against a jab or a takedown, but if you grab my wrist and then just stand there, boy, you're in for it.

Sorry Aikido guy...but aikido is a pretty weak style compared to most styles. It has some good stuff, but Aikido guys cant defend a shoot nor take a low roundhouse. Real grapplers dont like aikido because you cant use it in a grappling match, sorry brotha. As far your questions, there kind of stupid. If youre taking a grappling class, why would they pay much attention to striking? Some classes touch it a little. It sounds like you want MMA or Vale Tudo training. Also, you wanna take grappling but not go to the ground...Judo is for takedowns. I dont see how you plan to grapple with someone standing, once you take him down you usually gotta go with him so once your down you should learn what to do when your there. Judo is a SPORT. Are you in it for sport, competition, mma or what?

There are grappling classes that touch a lot on striking defense. A good instructor will teach defenses against striking, even in a jiu-jitsu schools. Take the time to really see what classes around your area offer self defense in their grappling program. A lot of schools lean toward the sport aspect of the art. I train in both Gjj and combat sambo, and as far as covering striking and counters, I prefer the combat sambo because of its close quarter fighting techniques.

I was just joking around After about 5 years in aikido I came to the same conclusion myself.
