  • Wrist Locks

Do any of you use wrist locks in your grappling? I've always liked Chin Na and I read about it and practice it on my friends, and occasionally I'll be able to use in when I roll. Obviously finger locks are pretty precarious and "cheap" so they are usually used only for self-defence, but Chin Na and traditional Jujutsu is full of wrist, elbow, and shoulder manipulations that are pretty interesting, do any of you study or ably such holds?

Yea, I practice JJJ and we have about 8 wrist locks up to Shodan, We also combine them with nerve attacks and finger locks. Be sure to learn the counters and escapes especially from a wrist grab. (Commonly used in street brawls and by wrestlers.)

Absolutely, our style is big on chin na. I like some locks better than others but chin na in general is one of my favorite subjects

We use em. Personally I use it in the standing position with new guys or if I messed up on arm bar and have him in a position where its easy to get.

Don´t like them, except for self defense

We did them for JJJ for six years before I started BJJ, and I don´t like them for competition because they´re difficult to apply with control - someone will resist, then all of a sudden the wrist bends and the joint is damaged.

There´s a guy here in Brazil who beat four or five guys to win the worlds, and apparently broke all of their wrists. I´ve had hydrocortisone injections in both my wrists, so if anybody gets near them I do a bongo solo

A BONGO SOLO, that is very funny!

Hmmm, I guess I don't wanna be like the guy who won worlds by perminently damaging his opponents...

I hope I can somehow tie Chin Na in with my grappling, I'll have to experiment and tell you guys how it goes.

In BJJ the only wrist lock we commonly used was "mao de vaca" (cow's hand)- which is just a regular bent wrist lock. It wasn't used as an attack itself, it was used when the guys graps his hadns/forearms in order to avoid the armbar. Sometimes you lost the armbar but could tap him out with the mao de vaca.
As a rule, Chin Na type locks are hard to get on the ground (BJJ goes after the big joints-legs, arms, neck). On time I was rolling with a JJJ guy, even though I was close to mount and in a superior position, he tried to do a wrist or finger lock (can't exactly remember). That was a mistake. I simulated the flurry of blows that would have come down on him. So: position first, submission later.

Obviously, I love my positioning. However, in positions where I have control over my opponent and am facing him (bottom gaurd, top mount), I can play around with Chin Na wrist and elbow locks, maybe even shoulder locks. Though Chin Na is basically doneon the feet, I'd be conmfortable working it on the ground, and my BJJ opponents wouldn't really know what i was doing.

Also, if I am causing someone to tap from a wrist lock, is that causing more damagine that causing a tap from any other lock? I would hope not. That story about the guy winning worlds by using wrist locks and breaking everyones wrists is pretty daunting.

yeah u gotta be careful with wristlocks, they can dmg people really easily if u not careful. nex thing u know, all the tendonds in their arm have been snapped and are all balled up....

wristlocks however are incredibly effective, they can allow someone much smaller to control a larger person. also, if u get somene in an armbar, or triangle, u can usually add a wristlock to it as well.

Jacare' DeSouza pulls a NASTY wristlock, from standing, in the worlds (last year??, actuall I think two years ago) and broke the guys arm.

In my style they are the core technique. They are very effective so I like them a lot.
