When you say "punching range" and "kicking range" you assume that certain attacks are your only options in certain distances.
I'm not assume anything, that's ridiculous. When fighters clinch, they don't JUST clinch. They incorparate strikes into the techniques. Same goes for grappling.
'kicking' and punching' is just a certain terminology passed around to mean 'close-in'/'long range' fighting. Plus it's a convienient way to tell a boxer to get some kicks going
