  • MMA fighter stops machete weilding maniac

A martial arts expert helped avert a potentially deadly tragedy when a machete-wielding man charged at a city cop in a crowded West Edmonton Mall food court. Michael Jerace, who competes in mixed-martial arts King of the Cage fights, said he was standing in the Phase 3 food court Sunday when he heard a "ruckus" and shouts of, "Drop it!"

A man was darting around the food court brandishing a 12-inch machete in a frantic attempt to shake the pack of cops and mall security guards pursuing him. "It was like a pinball machine, how he was running and jumping on tables," Jerace, 32, told the Sun yesterday. Jerace said a female police officer told him to get out of the way, but then "dove out of the way" herself as the man confronted her.

Jerace said the man was then coming straight for him. Luckily for Jerace and the rest of the food-court patrons, his martial arts instincts kicked in. "I kind of side-stepped him and right-kicked him above the knees and he went down. He went flying and the knife went flying." The man got on his hands and knees and grabbed the machete, Jerace said, but the tumble had given police time to catch up to him.

"The cops started hitting him with their batons, so I just stood there and watched the festivities," said Jerace. "He wouldn't let go of that knife." Police spokesman Karen Carlson said police responded to the mall food court just after 5 p.m. after getting a report that someone was selling drugs and might have a machete.

When the man charged at the female cop with the machete, she made the split-second decision to "back away" instead of drawing her gun, said Carlson. "The main factor in why she didn't pull the firearm out is because of the number of people that were there." Carlson said the man was arrested after he was "tripped" by an unidentified mall patron.

    Your classic multiple attacker scenario.

Notice the knife did not help him

If the guy with the blade knew how to really use it, then he would of sliced and diced his way out of trouble.

MMA fighter verses knife fighter, with the same knowledge. Knife fighter every time.

Yeah, Yeah, but with the same knowledge, no drugs heads. The knife fighter would win, as soon as the MMA/Cage fighter got in range, he would lose some blood, maybe a arm or two.

If the knife fighter doesn't know how to use it and just has it for threat value, then you can fight him as if the knife wsn't there.

          Which are you speaking about?

I want to see you try and put that shit to the test. My money is on the guy with the knife....everytime. (unless there's a guy with another weapon, even a longer knife.)

Only people who have trained with weapons on a regular basis, will be able to disarm a trained knife fighter. The knife fighter or machette attacker in this case, with the right training, just step off or square him up and just cut, sever and kill. Job done, fight over.

For the record, are we talking about people who are trained to use weapons?

self preservation, man. You not only need training with an edged weapon, you need timing and a shitload of LUCK to pull off a stip or a disarm. Disarms are accidental if not incidental.

Don't get confused with disarms and disarming someone, if he attacks, then if you have trained with blades and are aware of how blades make people fight. Then as he or she attacks then you cut the attacking arm, sever the other as you move then if needed KILL. But yes you're right, you have to get it spot on, but that is where you training comes in. Get it wrong in the training hall and correct on the street.

If you are trying to disarm an attacker and you are unarmed, then yes, if that person know's how to fight with a knife, you have a major problem on your soon to be cut and bleeding hands.

Most people who carry knives have no idea how to use them.

Read the "Vu says just run" thread in the Urban combat section, see what Leo Gaje has to say about the subject...I tend to trust his knowledge.

An unarmed defense against a knife is usually a bad idea, unless you have no other choice.

Actually it held over droves of cops and security guards for a while. Probably best to fight out of a corner if you have a knife though.
As ive noted on this board, Ive had weapons pulled on me one-on-one all alone senario's, its a whole new ballgame when you see a weapon and you know 100% for sure the guy WILL stab you if you dont take it away properly. I wouldnt advise it without practice, unless you life is on the line and you have no choice.

The guy's a professional fighter; even most trained people have never been kicked by someone that's that good at kicking. Add to that the confusion of the situation and the fact that he didn't know he was facing a guy with pro level MA skills and he probably never knew what hit him. I don't think simply holding a knife makes you ready to face a fighter that has you hopelessly outclassed even under the best of circumstances let alone while you're running from the law. As far as this story goes I think everything else is just hypothetical speculation.
