Famed referee Richard Steele has retired after 40 years in the sport of boxing. This announcement came as a shock to the Nevada State Athletic Commision at the officials' post fight meeting following the HBO-televised bout between Mayweather and COrrales;where Steele had just been praised by the commission for his performance as the referee that fight Saturday night in Las Vegas. Steele told Fightnews "I might as well quit while I'm on top." Steele, who runs the Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Gym at Nevada Partners, said he will stay involved in the fight game and continue to train new officials, but he said "You'll never see me referee another fight"
Me personally I owe a great big thank you to Mr.Steele and his beautiful and I do mean beautiful wife Gladys. As a 16 year old gym rat,he hauled me to and from the gym many times. He also kept alot of the bad people away from me. He taught me about the boxing business. Which is something he didnt have to do. That is a man who truly does care about fighters and not to many people do. It's a shame we have now lost the 2 best referee's in boxing in less than a year.
