Personally, I think you try for the BJJ school that's nearer to you first. If the BJJ teacher is good, I say go for it. BJJ and GJJ aren't really that different, as many have stated already. It's how you get along with the teacher is all that matters. If the BJJ teacher is bad....maybe find another school that's also nearby? Or you can always take up Judo ^_^

Well I have jsut started to, but under johnwill/machado BJJ, which isnt to different from gracie either due to the fact that there is a family line in there as well. Im enjoying it and it is gonna be a part of my life. For a little country like New Zealand where I lve the art of bjj is really kicking into gear. Happy training dude and keep in touch. Maybe even have a roll with me one day.

Even though I have trained Jiu-Jitsu for years it still amazes me that people outside of the Gracie family try to differentiate between GJJ and BJJ. The real difference is that here in the good old USA Rorion Gracie owns the term "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" and has sued (and won) other members of the Gracie Clan for using the term. If you see anyone using the term "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" in a commercial setting here in the USA then Rorion Gracie is getting a cut of it . . . and if he isn't getting his cut then there is probably a law suit close behind.

In Brazil it is just Jiu-Jitsu, here in the USA it SHOULD be just Jiu-Jitsu . . . Claiming that one is better at selfdefense and "the basics" while the other focuses on "sport Jiu-Jitsu" is just silly. Differentiating between the two does nothing productive.

I apologize for joining the conversation rather late and I hope the person who initiated the thread is enjoying his training.
