  • what is a good size ring

Well it seems we are going to build our own ring, I currently have a 20 X 20 matt
so I am going to make it this size or smaller would a 16 X 16 be to small for mma if it was an amature comp. this would keep it at 8 4X8 frames, easy to move for shows, anyone ever fight in a ring this size, I know boxing and we spar in a 12 X 12 but fight in at least a 16 X16 so I would like any input, before going to the yard!

    the ring

It is an 1 1/2" but it is a reselite wrestling matt so it should be firm enough, I find actuall wrestling matts to be more firm than usa boxing approved rings, you get some puff between the canvas and the paddedsheets. but for both and so I am figuring on making 8 platforms of 1/2 plywood on 2/4 frames with a center 2/4 frame in the middle of each one, then securing the frames with a beam around the out side, the weight of the matt as well as the framing will hold them down and together.

the poles are 4" steel pipes welded to 1/4 plates secured to the corner 4 platforms (carrige bolts) I am also counter weighting the corners with plates to hold the platform down!

I wouldn't go to this trouble but I am having a charity tournament for toys for tots in december and they charge $1000 to rent the ring that is not a typo $1000 so I figured my church has lots of construction guys we will make it and have it in the future as well. I can get the lumber donated I think and even if not 8 1/2 plywood sheets will run me $200 or less and it will be ours forever.
