  • My Knee Surgery-Meniscus repair

Besides some oral surgery to take my wisdom teeth out, this is my first major surgery. I was not looking forward to this at all. And I hope this will be my last major surgery, at least for a very long time.

The main reason I've had this surgery is that I've had this tear in the meniscus last year from my horrible car accident. I babied my knee since the accident which happened in August or September (I can't remember the exact time) and was going PT and taking it slow in training. I thought by December, my knee was getting better. Once in a while, I'd pop my knee but each time, the pain wasn't as bad.
Then last month, my knee locked up in a 45 degree angle. I couldn't flex or bend the knee. It was frozen in a locked position and this was serious. I had to go to my doctor and he jammed a needle in my knee to put some anit-inflammatory (I think Cortisone) in my knee and it hurt like HELL!
It took over 7 days before I could straighten out my knee and extend it. I knew that with my knee locking up, I had to have the surgery if I'm going to keep training Jiu JItsu.

I've talked to some guys and they've had local instead of general anesthetic. I asked my doctor about getting only a local and he basically said that any Ortho that does a local is a hack. In order properly do the knee, you have to have the patient out. He's going to be twisting and turning my leg to make sure to look at every nook and cranny in my knee to make sure everythings cleaned up. I'll be having a tournaquet put on my leg to reduce the blood flow and that can make a person's leg very uncomfortable after about 15 minutes.

Friday, I went into the hospital to get all checked out.
I even a nurse come in to give me a lesson on how to use crutches and I had to walk about 10 feet with the crutches so she would approve I knew how to use them.
    Stooopid
But I guess there are people out there that have no clue how to use crutches..
I peed in a cup, had an EKG, blood drawn and a chest X Ray.
At least now I know I'm healthy. My doctor got the results from the blood work in 2 hours and told me my levels are extremely good; liver, kidney functions all in the best/highest levels.

So now it's try to get as much work done as possible since I'll be out for probably the rest of the week and I'll have my 4th of July re-habbing.
I know in so many weeks, my knee will be feeling good but I'd like to fast foward to that point.

Well, at least soon, I can go back to training 100% instead of just taking it slow and not training hard.
It was pretty bad for a while; when I was sparring, if I had someone in my guard, I'd just let them pass, mount me and then do a reversal so I wouldn't have much pressure on the knee..

I talked to one guy on Sunday at a Crossfit work out, had his knee scoped, he walked out of the hospital and was on an excercise bike the next day. He did the surgery a few years ago and was 34. The owner of the building I'm in, he just had his meniscus scopred and he's going to be in the office today and had the surgery last Monday.

My Surgery yesterday was successful, no problems, no complications.

Oh how I hate to wake up early. But with no choice, I woke up at 4:55, took a shower and was careful not to get any water in my mouth so that I wouldn't drink any. NO food or water after midnight. I was asked this question way too many times today.
Driving over that early in the morning, just when the sun is coming up, it's kind of weird.

It's a strange feeling of walking into the hospital, to know that I won't be walking out the same way I came in.
I have to sign up on a sheet at admitting. They made a big deal about me getting there at 5:30 am but I went in later since my doctor told me to come in at 5:45. Ok, so it's only 15 minutes but I got 15 minutes more sleep. I still had to wait a half hour. And then there was problems with my insurance coverage. I figured that might happen.

I'm taken downstairs with a few other people to get prepped. I have to put that dumb gown on. The nurse told me to take everything off. I decided to keep my briefs on instead of commando. No one checked and no one cared. Once again the questions about when I ate and drank last. One nurse double checked which knee I was getting surgery on and put a big red X on the knee. Yeah, you've heard the stories about doctors amuptating the wrong leg, a wrong kidney and other botched surgeries.
I had to put that dumb looking cap on my head. One nurse from the surgical team came in and then the Anesthesiologist came into give me a brief talk, asked if I had any questions. The guy was very cool. Then my Ortho doc came in to make sure I was ok.
I'm wheeled into a few sets of doors and then finally into the room. They had put in IV in my hand and then when I was in the surgical room, the Anesthesiologist told me I'll feel a rushing sensation and looking back, that's when he put in the anesthesia. No one asked me to count backwards. I was ready and had memorized all the numbers...ha

The next thing I remember is someone asking me to blow out which I think was when they took out the breathing tube, I'm not sure. I was in and out of consciousness. I do remember being very uncomfortable and just couldn't find a comfortable position. I next remember I'm in some room, a few nurses would come and talk to me and I don't remember what they were saying or what I said. I was in a bit of pain so I got a short of demerol and that sure hurt getting the shot, a lot of burning in my arm. After about 10 minutes, the med kicked in and I was so drowsy and fell asleep for about a half hour. The one nurse didn't want me to sleep anymore and told me I had to stay awake to get discharged. Every time she came in, I would kind of sit up and then when she left, slumped over.

I came home, fell asleep for a few hours, woke up a few times and just finally ate some dinner.

My knee is throbbing and hurts but I can walk a bit. I really don't need any crutches but figured it's better to use them instead of messing up my knee. My doctor called tonight to see how I was doing and he said it's ok to walk a bit if I wanted to go out for dinner but not walk too much. I"m pretty much going to stay home for the next few days.

So, not much to report on except that the doctor told me when he went in, he was surprised how much damage there was to my knee.....and got it all cleaned up

Now, I'm on the road to recovery (sounds like I'm an addict).

And I Hope that now, I'll be 100% and able to train without fear of hurting my knee.
It's been close to a year now since I've been able to do that.

Sorry, didn't read all of that but I've had a few "procedures" myself (all non-BJJ related) and I've been lucky enough to have gotten back to my training quickly. Get well soon and spend as much time with your physical therapist as your insurance will allow. Get back on the mats as soon as you can and take it slow at first (stick to drills) . . . but, once again, get back to your training as soon as you possibly can.

    Goodluck

I'm going through that right now. I hurt my meniscus in April. I am opting out for rest and recuperation..The doc told me to save my MRI films in case it acts up. I am back to training but staying away from the damaged knee. I also wear a heavy brace now. Keep us posted on your recovery. If I am not careful, I will be under the knife also. Which Meniscus did you hurt? I hurt the outside lateral meniscus.

here's what I posted on another forum

        Day 3

I really don't have any pain but my doctor wants me to take 600 mg of Ibuprofen with each meal-
        mainly for reducing the inflammation.
I do have these pills he told me to take once a day for pain-Ultram ER.

I can walk around now without any crutches or a cane but figure that I should still have them with me. I'm not supposed to walk around much but I can do that now.

Oh for those interested -I can pee standing up now!

        Is demerol a narcotic?
I sure slept really well after a shot of that stuff...

I had one bad sore throat the whole day after the surgery.

In the morning, when I was half awake, the anesthesiologist came in to give me a quick update. He told me the chances of any problems with the anesthesia was like the odds of a person dying in a car or from a plane flight, it does happen, but the odds are so small.

He told me I'll have a tube that will keep my airway open and no saliva will go down into my lungs. AND he told me that once in a great while, people will bite down on this tube and crack their teeth.....

          so I'm thinking WTF?

he assured me it doesn't happen that often but he does have to tell me the risks...

Well, I did wake up from the anesthesia and didn't crack any of my teeth...

I do remember being shaken quite hard and someone yelling in my ear to blow so I think that's when they took the tube out. He had to yell at me twice since I was so out of it.

They put some antiseptic on my leg that turned my leg a bluish green color and I still have the red X on my leg.

            Day 7

            Day 7 from my Surgery.

I just got back from my Ortho doctor.

Today is the day I got my two stitches out. And I figured I'd be in and out in about 5-10 minutes.
            wrong!

Besides getting my stitches out, the doctor said I had a lot of swelling from fluid build up and he needed to drain that...
So, you know what that meant, a BIG FU CKING NEEDLE in my knee again.

Putting some antiseptic on the knee, the usual freezing of the knee, putting some pain killer shots......then the huge needle. He drained two big vials of blood and then put in some more anti inflammatory-some type of Cortisone. The pressure wasn't as bad as when my knee was locked up.

I'm being a wuss about this but it's like going in for a teeth cleaning and finding out, you have to have a root canal.

Ok so that was a poor analogy but you get the picture.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the Ortho doc's brother used to train Jiu JItsu with us so he knows what I do and said, NO jiu jitsu for 2-3 months.

Interestingly, he said I should have about 85% recovery in 2-3 months but that last 15% will take up to a year to heal up.

Well, another step in the road to recovery.

I know lots of you dudes have had worse knee injuries and surgeries but well, I thought I'd document what I went through.

[I finally get to take shower tomorrow without having to wrap up my knee in plastic wrap. It was suggested to use a garbage bag to protect the sutures but since my knee was shaved, I used duct tape and the clear plastic wrap, that worked a whole lot better]

              day 9

I still can't bend my knee that much but it's great to take the stairs and not have to step up or down, one at a time.

Driving is much easier now, I don't have to put the seat all the way back so I don't have to kep my knee as straight and can bend it more. I now feel like I can drive more normal, instead of feeling like I'm driving from the back seat.

It's nice now being able to get up and get something to eat or drink, taking a shower without much hassle and other simple life tasks.

                Day 10 and 11

Yesterday was Day 10 after my surgery, I've been able to walk up and down the stairs without any trouble or walking weird.

Today, I'm able to fully lock my knee when I stand up.

Each day, I find I'm gaining more mobility and can bend it more.

The doctor said it wll be a while before I can squat down to bend my knee enough to touch my butt with my heel.

MAN! That sounds like a hell of alot more than a meniscus issue. I don't think I had as many troubles as you are when I had my ACL repaired.

Good luck and take it easy but make sure you spend EVERY second with your physical therapists that you can!

If you had less problems than me and had your ACL repaired, consider yourself very lucky.

I've talked to many guys and they've all had a lot longer down time when they went under the knife to repair an ACL.

But most times, they were going in for more than just the ACL.
I talked to a few guys who had bags on their knees from all the fiulds for drainage.

maybe you're a young dude since the owner of my building, he had the same surgery as me and he's having a rough time and can't climb stairs well and he had his surgery a week before mine.

hey dude, I see you are in SLC

Do you train BJJ there? Pedro?

A guy was asking about BJJ in SLC...

                      Hi,

I've had two surgeries on the same knee. It's as good as new and never bothers me. The recovery isn't fun but it will be worth it.

Hopefully you'll be back on the mat in no time.

                        Hey Tim

I remember when you had one of your surgeries, I'm just not sure if it was the first or second time.

Glad to know that your knee is 100%

I train with the Machado BJJ guys, there's some great BJJ here, and I'm 37 years old. I was out of training for four weeks after my ACL (Patella Tendon version) and three days for my scope (same knee) that removed a chunk of my meniscus. And perhaps my recovery has been unusual. My instructor had his knee scoped four weeks ago and is frustrated with his recovery too.

If you know someone who is looking to train around here have them contact me through our website (http://www.slcbjj.com ) and I'll let them know about all of the schools in the area so that they can check it out for themselves.

                            Goodluck with your recovery.
