[QUOTE=Tim McFatridge;231804] They have records of fights going on for 120 rounds!!!! These guys would stop take break, have a beer or something then get back up and goQUOTE]

Rounds ended when one fighter took a knee and wanted to rest, it could be a 10 second round or 5 minute round, so the numbers dont mean it was a 360 minute fight !

Actually Oma...the rules would depend on the where they were fighting as well as who was fighting. If they were using Queensbury Rules then that may be the case. I am talking about here in America back in the good ole frontier days. They have records of some of these fights going on for two and a half hours. I know they did not fight using todays three minute rounds. I was not saying they followed the rules of today. What I meant (I should have stated it better) is they had rounds that were timed just as we do today. If you do not believe me the go out and find the Boxing Almanac and look through it and you will see. Also alot of times they would fight until one guy was either knocked out or could not physically go on due to exhaustion or injuries. It did not matter if the other person took a knee... in some cases if the fighter took a knee the crowd watching would start throwing things into the area where they were fighting or the crowd would go and lift the guy back to his feet so he could fight til the time keeper sounded the bell/whistle. It all depended on where they were fighting, what they were fighting for and what rules they were following.

Sorry for another post guys...I was going to say...when I was fighting in some local NHB fights back in 1997 and 1998 we had limited rules. There was one round with a 20 minute time limit, one overtime round with a 5 minute time limit, no gloves, no groin, throat or eye strikes and no hair pulling. You could punch, kick, knee, elbow, throw or submit. If you were on the ground you had to be working the entire time. If you were laying there tryign to take a breather and was not working for more than a minute then you were stood back up. I would have really enjoyed being able to go to a knee to take a rest and have that end the round...hell and that stop the punches for awhile... I just mentioned this because it was not all that long ago that MMA was much more brutal than it is now in regards to the time limits and rounds. I really like the way MMA is now with the different weight classes and all.

Yeah, boxing was really brutal in those days. I love boxing...both now days and the days of Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson and the likes. The guys back then were just a heck of lot tougher than the boxers of today. Not a knock on today's boxers but back then the boxers were not paid alot of money and they were hungry. They were not able to take several months and recuperate. Good thread though guys.
