In response to your question about how I was attacked....

Some drunk guy whom I'd never seen before walked out of a bar about 30 feet ahead of where I was, I could tell he was plastered because he was hooting and hollering loudly and basically just acting like a moron, but I was walking in that direction so I continued and as I walked past him he began to yell things at me like the usual "hey bitch!", "what's up ya little pussy!" and "want me to kick your head in!" etc....anyhow, I ignored him and kept walking, so he decided to follow me down the street yelling stuff, and I figured he wasn't going to let up so I stopped and turned around to see hwat the hell he wanted. Well he just kept walking towards me and threw something at me, I don't know exactly what it was but I think it was a cigarette lighter or something, whatever it was it missed and he came towards me and kicked me in the stomach which didn't hurt but surprised me enough to throw me off and he then punched me dead in the face. It stunned me a little then he grabbed my collar and kept punching kinda like in a hockey fight, I tried to hit back but it was pretty futile. After a minute or two of this some guys I didn't know came over and pulled him away, he was still freaking out yelling and kicking in the air. I got up and walked away then.

I wasn't really hurt physically but I was really mad at myself for not being able to defend myself.

brazillian jujitsu or its very closely related cousin wrestling ...wrestling for takedowns bjj for ground game...boxing for stand up but if you must choose one choose brazilian jujitsu/wrestling...but DONT TAKE MY WORD FOR IT RENT AND WATCH NO HOLDS BARRED TOURNAMENTS write down the top three in each division and their styles ive watched several hundred hours of bare knucle fights and its always the same ..brazillian jujitsu artists with boxing experience and wrestlers with boxing experience.. always the winners..traditional martial artists tend to get their butts kicked . ..muay thai is effective also but generally if its allied with bjj/wrestling ... dont choose just any instructor...is he like mine and goes into the park and politely asks a bunch of guys who are kicking a heavy bag if they would like to come in for a friendly sparring session ..or does he hide behind his belt and never sparrs ...telling you that he would surely kill you if you engaged him... the ninja death touch... in boxing dont choose an instructor that ends up looking like hamburger when he sparrs against anyone who outweighs him by five pounds choose one like mine who has a head the size of a tv screen but that no one seems to be able to hit a multi time champion not some bozo with 3 amateur fights 2 of them draws ...someone who will teach you lateral movement and that the jab is key...who will teach you to move your head with each jab and strike so you become almost untouchable to the average bloke i swear ive seen my boxing coach fight for 20 minutes and never really get hit...he even calls the shots before he delivers its not magic hell just throw a fake away from the target and the proceed with his execution ...so id rather a new guy learn techniques off the internet form a world champion than end up with the local hero who will try to teach you how to apply a wrist lock while standing on a berzerk 300 pounder on pcp..so when you are considering learning a technique say to yourself HAVE I SEEN THIS TECHNIQUE APPLIED IN NO HOLDS BARRED COMPETITION WITH CONSISTENT POSITIVE RESULTS...dont worry if at first watching tapes leaves you feeling like its just a jumbled mess its not if the competitors are winners..

Ninja Death Touch lmao Thats the funniest thing ive heard all week. Thanks for the laugh. Have you heard this one I can show you the kick because im not warmed up yet. I was watching a Tae kwon do instructor teach a class and thats what he told his students and the assitant instructor showed the kick. It was a side kick and a spinning rear kick. (This is meant to show the instructor, not the art of tae kwon do itself, was full of crap Please no tkd people get offended) But then if he knew the ninja death touch he wouldnt need the kick lol

for standup...you should train muay Thai...and then bjj...because it always ends up on the ground anyway...
with these two behind you...you will not have to worry so much about some guy smacking you around...but always remember some guy on the street may know...knife fu or gun do...lol...

                        Hi,

I would like to address this message to everyone but especially KenJeet,

You are exactly the kind of guy I would like to get advice from. You sound like you've seen many common street fights. What I mean by that is fights by the average Joe that does not know any martial arts. I have been trying to compile all the different ways that common street fights start so that I can train for each of them (my reason for martial arts is not to compete but to protect myself on the street in the event that should ever be necessary)

“Having worked as a bouncer a few years back, I became privy to how most common fights begin and can tell you right now that the majoriy do involve two people saying okay let me show you what I've got and I want you to show me what you got. It rarely turns into a match style fight. Most fights that I have witnessed involve a close range encounter at a bar, club, etc., in which the guy either grabs you in a headlock, pushes you, tries the common John Wayne cross, bear hugs you from behind, puts you in a full nelson or tries to tackle you. These are all pretty common responses from the common Joe on the street. Although arts like Muay Thai, Boxing, etc., will make you a formidable fighter, you need a knowledge of effective close range attacks to vital points, locks, checks, buckles, as well as the knowledge to escape different kinds of attacks. However, I think there first needs to be some kind of training in the different ways to defend, break holds, move into trapping range, strike vital points, and disrupt an opponents knowledge before you go out there and try to slug it out like the next guy.”

Can you give me any specific advice on how to train for these scenarios, or any other ones that you or anyone else can think of. The place I live in does not have any BJJ or kick boxing schools so to a large extent I have to learn on my own, with my training (grappling) partner. So far I have purchased some great videos from Panther videos by Bas Rutten, some russian Sambo videos, some Marco Ruas videos, I have also look into some books that tell you how to get the most striking power possible (I have no idea whether that this kind of book is actually helpful as I have not bought it yet) I have also looked into a couple instructional books on street fighting :

                        1. A BOUNCER'S GUIDE TO BARROOM BRAWLING by Peyton Quinn

                        2. Some other books by Marc "Animal' MacYoung.

I would appreciate any advice anyone can give on how to train to fight on the street (not that I want to do that, for fear of getting stabbed or shot, but my concern is for when it is impossible to avoid a street fight). So that means any training methods any helpful books or videos, or any other advice.

I also want to give the list of the kind of fights I have seen and then I would really appreciate it if people would add to that list regarding types of fights they have seen (not counting fights where the two guys knew martial arts).

                        1. One guy tackles his opponent, (like a football tackle), then
starts punching him in the face from on top.
                        2. One guy gets his opponent in a head lock and starts punching him
                        in the face.
                        3. One guy pushes another guy, then they start to go at it.
                        4. The two guys grab eachother's shirts and start trading punches (i.e hockey fight).
                        5. One guy grabs the other guy's shirt and start punching him.
                        6. One guy grabs his opponent's shirt with both hands and lifts him
up against a wall, or pushes him against a wall.
                        7. two guys are staring down each other, and the people around them, push them into eachother other.
                        8. One guy (usually this guy is far bigger than his opponent) lifts another guy up by the shirt and goes eye to eye with him (he either lifts him completely off the ground or just pulls him close) then he starts punching him.

These are the only ways I have seen fights start in my life, but obviously I haven’t seen that many fights, so if anyone here could add to my list I would appreciate it.

                        Thanx, any advice is appreciated.
