how whacking at tire with a sledge hammer is a practical training exercise?
Anyone tuned into Spike TV will understand.
Swinging a sledge hammer from a resting position, all the way around and banging something requires muscles in the legs, hips and shoulders - like throwing a big punch.
That actually comes from Filipino Martial Arts. Alot of FMA practitioners will take old tires and tie them to a tree or stand of some sort and will then hit them with there sticks. They do not just get out there and start swinging wildly though. They will actually hit using the different striking angles of the stick and work different striking patterns...like a boxer throws punches in combos...a FMA will throw strikes with the stick in multiple hit combos as well. When you hit a heavy bag or in this case a tire it builds not only your endurance but also your strength. You will use your entire body when hitting because when you swing a stick you will have to twist at the waist and you will bend your knees slightly and you will use your back muscles, shoulder muscles and arms to hit with power. You will build alot of power from doing this. The only thing to be careful of when swinging a sledge hammer is you want to make damn sure that you do not let it bounce back and hit you...laugh, I did. I had a friend that was bragging about how he works out swinging a hammer at a tire in his back yard to build his knockout power. I went and watched him one day and he was showing off by just swinging it for like 5 minute rounds....well when he got tired he hit the tire right on the ridge and it bounced back and hit him in the leg and broke his shin bone. I did not know whether to laugh or help him up. So I did both...i was laughing my ass off while picking him up and putting him in the car to take him to the emergency room...wish i would have had that one on camera.

Throwing a weight arond is always good for your muscles and this hammer swinging includes lots of functional muscles also. Liek the torso and the hands.
