  • Silva wants Liddel

Did anyone else watch Pride the real deal on PPV??? Silva came out in the middle of the show and challenged Liddell this February to a fight.

I wonder if Liddel and the UFC will step up this time.. From what I heard they pulled out of the contract Just a couple weeks before Silva was supposed to fight Liddell last time

The first time Chuck was supposed to fight Silva, he entered the Pride OWGP (2003 I think?), made it to the semis, but lost to Quinton Jackson.

Chuck and Liddell were supposed to fight this November, however since Silva got knocked out by Mirko Cro Cop, he got a 90 day suspension on his fighting license in Nevada, thus preventing the fight. Had he won the OWGP we'd be seeing him and Chuck in November.

Also, most Americans now know Wanderlei Silva as the guy who got knocked out by Vitor Belfort, Mirko Filipovic, and who lost to Tito...

This latest affair is nothing more than PRIDE posturing to the U.S. fans, trying to steal the spotlight from the UFC, when really the reason the fight hasn't happened is because Cro Cop knocked him out...

Wanderlei is a good fighter, but I'd much rather see some of PRIDE's heavyweights fight in the U.S. (Cro Cop, Hunt, Fedor)

Actually, PRIDE and UFC never came to an agreement. Whether Wanderlei got KTFO or not, the fight still wouldnt have happened in November or anytime after that. The UFC wanted a 3-fight deal with Wanderlei but PRIDE just wanted him to fight 1 fight in the UFC, against Liddell.

And Liddell would KO Silva, IMO

He's improved tons since vitor and tito. And Mirko would kill anyone in the ufc.

The odds of it happening would have been a hell of a lot better had Wanderlei won the OWGP, and I personally think they could have come to an agreement.

And yes, I agree Chuck would likely knock out Wandy. Chuck's style is kind of strange, but he's great at finding a fighters chin - if there ever was a fighter you could call a 'knockout artist' - Chuck's that fighter. Of course Wandy could win too, pretty even fight - I guess that's why so many people want it to happen.

Jackson was the last great puncher that Liddell fought. Randy Couture and Jeremy Horn could throw pretty good, but they didn't have the knockout power Jackson had.. It seems like Liddel never fights anyone in the UFC who can throw a good punch back

I it's funny that people seem to forget the fact that Crocop was a weight class above Silva, and I doubt Liddell would of been able to last any longer against Crocop.
Vitor Belfort is one of the biggest waste of talent ever, he's pretty much got the power to knock out anyone. If he'd ever get his head out of his ass he'd be back on top in no time. And as far as I'm concerned about Tito, he's just gone down hill while Silva's gone up hill while. Silva's been pride's champion for a while now and tito's been struggling to get back to where he was.. He's gonna need all the luck in the world when he fights Liddell

then there's no excuse why Liddell shouldn't fight Silva in February then.

Cro Cop and Silva weighed in at pretty much the same weight (I think Silva was actually a few pounds heavier) for their OWGP match. Cro Cop is a small heavyweight, and Silva has fought at HW many times (against Hunt, Yoshida, Rampage, Fujita, Cro Cop). But yes, Cro Cop is the best striker in the world right now in MMA (Mark Hunt is up there as well - although Hunt is not as good from a technical standpoint), and I still think Silva is a great fighter (I have tons of respect for a fighter who, even after losses, comes back strong as ever).

But it doesn't matter how good Silva really is, all that matters is the fans' perceptions. The casual fans buy up most of the PPV's and seats by far, so you need to cater to them. Right now, Silva vs. Liddell is not the most marketable matchup to the COMMON fan. If I were to guess, I'd say that Silva and Liddell will fight sometime in the middle of 2007. Liddell needs to beat Tito, and Wandy needs to get a title defence under his belt to reclaim his marketability. Then the fight can really be sold.

As for Vitor Belfort, sometimes real life > professional life. He's had some struggles in his life, no doubt he doesn't have the heart to fight anymore. He's just going through the motions really, earning a paycheck.

I dunno if the fight will ever happen or not, but I do think Chuck would put Silva to sleep with those wacky loopy punches (and this is coming from a PRIDE fan).

If you're strictly speaking powerpunchers... then yea, you're right. But Randy is CERTAINLY a better boxer than Jackson, and I'm not sure that's really even up for debate... though Jackson could still knock Randy out(overwhelming power sometimes beats good technique sadly).

Can't agree more. In fact, even pound for pound, cro cop is just a better striker. Just better.

I just think Silva will be to much for Liddell. Cause when Silva comes in with a flurry he aint gonna back off until Liddells out..
