(Just to clarify it isnt their heel behind the knee cap, its usually the calf muscle or in some cases, the back of their knee cap is against the back of your kneecap. Usually calf in my experience)
my first judo instructor taught the small circular motion (traditional way) as well as this one Samurai is talking about, which the instructor referred to as "deep kouchi gari." not sure if that's actually an accepted term or just how he described it. the ouchis and kouchis you see in mma usually look to me alot more like this "deep" variation, almost wrapping the leg around the opponent's, and both guys going down (a traditional ouchi or kouchi is not a sacrifice throw). personally i like this variation better than the traditional, especially in competition when you can land with your shoulder right on the guy's gut or chest, leaves no doubt about ippon and gives a nice satisfying whoosh of air leaving lungs to boot

i think that's where he got his start, but really he came out of a shoot fighting stable in japanese pro wrestling where the fights can be showy but aren't rigged. that's where he got his flamboyant style. he's my favorite mma fighter ever!
