  • fitness or self defence???

    hey all,

what do you guys think is more important for your everyday life, fitness or self defence?

which do you think would convey the greatest benefit to your everyday life?

i think fitness myself... its inexpensive, you can work out whenever suits you rather than having to follow a class timetable, it teaches you discipline, goal setting, and dedication, you get measureable rewards, it clears your mind and gives you greater clarity of thought, it has trememdous benefits for your health and longevity, its extremely varied and can be tailored to your individual situation and basically its the cornerstone of good living.

    what do you think?

discipline, strength, dedication, clear mind, clarity of thought, and increased confidence are all attributes that can help one defend them self in a time of need.

fitness and self defense go together. however, since most self defense arts include some working out and conditioning as well, i would go with self defense.

Given the choice I would take self defence anytime. It goes hand in hand with fitness anyway and it may save your life......which a fit body may not.

you know, i was just watching one of those "most shocking video" shows on tv a few moments ago, and wow am i convinced more than ever that self defense skills are important to have. i just watched an hours worth of clips of all kinds of people being assaulted and brawling in public like animals. they even showed clips of cops being assaulted by criminals, it was crazy. what frustrated me was how in all these clips, the aggressors were untrained pieces of shit just trying to generate senseless violence. i realized that even a little bit of training would have stopped most of these aggressors in the videos pretty fast. its worth having, cause i am so convinced that in the real world even a small amount of training can make a huge difference. i watched so many people take ridiculous beatings that they could have saved themselves from had they some basic boxing or wrestling skills.

and btw, dude we need to get our cops some martial arts training. good lord! i dont know how many video clips i saw were it took like 10 cops to restrain 1 flailing jackass. there was actually 1 clip were you see a cop get a drunk kid in a head and arm and try to hip throw him, but the kid slips his head out and the officer falls in front of the kid, were he puts the cop in a chokehold from behind! and this was a drunk kid just being stupid! wtf???

well for every day i would say fitness it makes u stronger (i think i missed the point, but ok), fitnes makes ur muscle strong and so you can do many things all day if u are used to lift heavy weight and so on,..

the question was about every days life, so i tooked fitnes, but other than that i like self defense more, you dont need strenght to defend from somebody

If by self defense training you mean situational rote rehearsal stuff, then definitely fitness training. I think rote rehearsal self defense is close to worthless. I'm more of the Fairbarin/Applegate school of thought. Combat training should be simple and unrehearsed--10 basics you can always use.

I'm also against the idea of training MMA full contact all the time for fitness or self defense. You're WAY more likely to get hurt doing full contact than you are from a self defense scenario. It doesn't make sense to train hours weekly for something that has only a fraction of a percentage chance of happening. It certainly won't be like the sparring session with your quasi buddy at the dojo.

I think learning the basics and getting in shape is the way to go. You can combine it. Krav Maga has some good fitness programs that will actually increase your percentage chance of survival in a scruff.
