The protestants in N. Ireland consider themselves to be British; they carry British passports.  Many of their families were originally from England; more were from Scotland.  You can understand this if you know the difference between the Church of Ireland (Anglican) and Presbyterian protestants.  I have never met a Northern Irelander who refered to himself as English.

As you say, many were from Scotland and many from England. I've met plenty of protestants that consider themselves English/Scottish rather than Irish.Originally posted by joemurph
