  • Heel Hooks

    Heya guys,
I was working on heel hooks last night and although I thought I got it technically down, I think I am doing something wrong. When I do the heel hook with my partner, he doesn't feel it behind the knee but at the ankle. The same goes when he does it to me, although when my instructor did it to me, I totally felt it behind my knee. What am I doing wrong, is it the way I have my hands positioned or where there knee should be locked by my legs? Anyone have this same problem? Any help would be great.-ED

Why aren't you asking your instructor?

I am going back tonight to try again. My instructor thought my heel hook looked technically sound. It is just that my heel hook and his heel hook feel different. How many of you feel it in the ankle and how many feel it in the knee?-ED

          Try this:

-Make sure the opponent's leg is bent. A straight leg will put more pressure on the ankle.

-Make sure that you are going in a circular direction when you twist your upper body and arms. If you go backwards more than to your right or left, than you will again put more pressure on the ankle and not the knee.

Let me know how that works!

Also make sure that your knees are squeezed in together nice and tight, and make sure that their foot is wedged nice and tight under your armpit while you squeeze with your armpit and roll that elbow up.
