Unfortunately there are many fakes in BJJ just like every other style

For some people MA is about their image and they are attracted to whatever style is "Cool" at the time. At the moment it is BJJ.

I also hate people who jump on the Gracie bandwagon. I have attended seminars with Gracies that were really expensive yet I learnt nothing and others with guys you would never have heard of that were excellent.

We had Carly Gracie over to my old club and his seminar was just crap. We had guys turn up who I hadn't seen training in over a year and they all lined up for photos with him. Wankers!!

A group of guys went for their Blue Belts at the end of the Carly Gracie seminar and he just gave them out to everyone who tried. One guy asked if he could get a certificate and was told that he didn't provide certificates. In other words he is prepared to give out belts but not to stand behind them which is why he can give them to everyone who wants one. He can just deny them later if he needs to. Everything was about money (Definition of a McDojo)

He is a power lifter and I think has some Judo background. He was a black belt and then, from what I heard, was moved down by Rickson. When I started there, he was a brown belt. He has since gotten his black belt from Rickson. I don't know if he actually earned it or if it was given to him just to stop him from crying. He never rolls with the students and is rarely in class. He has a blue belt lead the class when he isn't there. He is a fireman and can't make it to the gym a lot. He has pretty much run off all of the advanced students because he is such a jerk. He talks a lot and calls his students names and just carries on like an ass when he is there. This school is all about the money and thats it. He calls the school Brazillian Jiu Jitsu Academy of Sacramento (http://www.dgweb.com/~sacbjj/index2.htm) and it is located on Fair Oaks Blvd. There is another school with a similar name, so don't confuse them. I don't have any information on the other school. So, if you are looking for a place to learn or train in jiu jitsu, stay clear of David Terry. He is a waste of your time and money. You will spend all of your time learning from and training with white belts. I hope this helps.

However, the thread was about David Terry, and, although Rickson is very skilled, David Terry runs his gym in such a way that he alienates most of his students after a while. If you go there, you would have a hard time finding a purple belt. Not because it is hard to advance there, but because they get sick of Dave and leave the gym. So, forget about the belts, go there and see if you can find many people that have trained with Dave for more than 5 years.
And to answer the original poster, David Terry is American.
I'm guessing you didn't get along with Dave Terry. Yeah, a fair number of people don't because he is very direct, doesn't beat around the bush, and has no trouble telling you what you're doing wrong. Yeah, it's not always 'happy and pleasant' there, but I've been training with him for 2 years now and I really appreciate the clarity and knowing exactly where I stand. If you don't have a good attitude, can't take criticism, can't get past your own ego, then no, you're not going to like training with him. He earned his black belt from Rickson Gracie and makes all of us earn our belts the hard way. Yes, he's a firefighter and has an unusual schedule, but he keeps it posted so we know when he's going to be there or not. A blue belt rarely leads class. Usually it's him or one of his purple belts, of which there at least 5 and a couple more about to be. There may be more, but many people train during the morning classes so I never meet/interact with them. As for his school only being about the money, that's extremely laughable. He has the lowest rates I've ever seen, no sign-up/initiation fees, no contracts (I just pay month to month), allows people to make up any and all missed classes; he's about as flexible as humanly posible when it comes to money. The fact that you say it's all about the money makes me wonder if you've ever even so much as called another martial arts school, of any style. You said that people at Dave Terry's would only ever end up learning and training with white belts. From my experiences at the school, with how open the advanced students are, and from reading your posts here, I seriously wonder if your attitude was just so bad and sour that that only people who were willing to roll with you were the white belts who didn't yet know any better, if what you said is even true at all.
