What ever happened to Fred Ettish??
I would think that if that happened to me, I'd find out all I could about more realistic fighting. Anyone heard anything? Is he training BJJ? Has he quit martial arts?
Is he still just doing kara"dee"?

    Anyone care?

A little over a year ago, someone from the Underground did a legit interview with him. I don't remember much, but he said things to the effect that he's still training in the same style, and although he still has a basic faith in it, he's emphasizing some different parts of the system now; that it was a great opportunity for him or that it was tough to get in the octagon, but that he might try it again sometime, and if he does, people will be surprised; and he knows that he caught a lot of flak for his performance that he didn't think he deserved.

I kind of wonder why he was made the scapegoat for sucky martial artists everywhere.

There were a LOT of scrubs in the early UFC's. Fred lasted longer than Scott Morris (destroyed by Pat Smith), for example.

So true, the guy Scott Morris, the Ninjitsu expert was demolished by Pat Smith in a very bloody match.
            Wasn't that UFC IV?

I read some place that Scott got his cheek caved in by Pat's continued elbows to the face.

Yeah, I thought I read that Scott had a fractured cheek-bone. To give him credit, he wanted to keep fighting.

I think he might have actually beaten someone in the first-round before being demolished by Smith.

                Can you imagine?

Scott Morris was quickly beaten to a pulp by a better athlete. Ettish actually got a chance to try his ineffective art for several minutes and it was painfully obvious that all his skills were useless. Fred Ettish clearly showed what a joke most karate institutions in the US are and that it is useless to train with such people. Also, Scott Morris did win a fight earlier in the night while Ettish was a replacement.
Rickson talks about fear and intelligence being closely related in Choke. Ettish clearly showed how stupid he was by stepping bravely into the octagon despite having no fighting skills whatsoever. If he had fought Royce or Pat Smith instead then it would have been over quickly and painlessly in Royce's case and quickly and painfully in Smith's case.

I'm not convinced that any art is "ineffective".

                    Certainly Fred was.

However, I believe that Fred would be equally ineffective at BJJ, Shootfighting, Freestyle Wrestling, Greco-Roman, Muay Thai, Boxing, Kickboxing, and Judo.

                    Sorry, Fred.

The funny thing about UFC 2 was Pat smith demolishing scott morris then thinking he was so hard. Then Royce Gracie took him down right away then pat smith tapped out like a little baby.

i think what made fred ettish's fight so embarassing was the fact that he wasn't taken out with a nasty barrage of heavy elbows from the mount. instead he rolled around on the ground attempting that pathetic "scissors-sweep' while being peppered with odd pot shots from a glassy-eyed putz who was almost as much of a bufoon as he was.

                            Ettish

I think that is it. Ettish looked totally inept going against a total shmo like Johnny Rhodes. There have been other guys who got taken out quickly, that huge Hawaiian guy who got KTFO by Tank comes to mind, but Ettish looked like crap against a guy who probably couldn't handle a lot of guys on this board.

Ettish is indeed still around. He is training harder than ever and he could kick a lot of ass if he chose to.
In the interview he said that he was aware of the fun people make of him on the internet. He was seeking legal advice with a view to suing the Fetal Fighrting webmaster. When asked if he wanted to fight in the UFC again he said he would love to. He also said that he watches every UFC.

Some photos appeared of him at the Underground a couple of months back. The mustache is gone and he is considerably bigger. He sort of looks like the b grade martial arts movie star Richard Norton now. I was amused to see a bulked up Fred Ettish.
He is the Vice President of a Karate Association and he is now a 5th Dan Black Belt.

I eagerly await the day he makes his triumphant return to the UFC. I heard he is trying to make 199lbs so he can challenge Tito.
