  • Ever have an instructor resent getting tapped?

A couple of guys run a bjj class at a health club in Los Angeles. I was down there and trained with them for a little fun. Now both guys are in much better shape than I and are much stronger (If I worked at a health club, I could probably be in better shape as well).

Any way, I rolled with this one instructor and tapped him several times (he got me a couple of times as well). I got him with an ankle lock. He also tapped to a nice cross-body arm bar. He also tapped from a knee on the chest.

The next time I go there the guy just wants to spar (no training techniques at all). He's using alot of strength and got me a couple times with collar chokes. Now I'm just wearing my tshirt, which the collar choke stretches the crap out of. People who were working out looked at my shirt kind of like what the hell have you guys been doing. Usually when somebody is wearing a t-shirt, I treat the sparring like no-gi. In any case, the guy really seemed to be looking for a little pay back.

In my opinion, high strength training matches are short on technique and long on injury potential. So I just let go and said cool you got me. I guess you have to be careful of who you're tapping. Opinions?

It's ego. And I'm not above it either...though I want to be. We all have people that we say to ourselves "Ok there's no way I will tap to this guy..."
Potential for injury is really high here. Plus there is a tension that comes out that I don't think is good for a learning type atmosphere.

I am doing very well in judo for instance, and don't get beat a lot...my tapping comes occasionally from a BJJ blue that shows up sometimes( ), but I'm able to keep him on the defensive at times too. Sooo where do you draw the line at training hard and being a jerk?
I personally think that if you constantly think of yourself as a student you don't mind getting beat as much by a better man. The better man wins, and you learn. That's the way it should be.
I have an instructorship in JKD, but I don't teach, and right now it's collecting dust on my wall I'd much rather continue my training as a martial artist then put the whole "master/instuctor" thing in my head...

I don't want to stop learning.

I practice JKD, and I love training BJJ. I like training with people more advanced than me, I have no problem tapping because that means I'm learning...one of the advanced guys in particular is great to spar with. Sometimes, he can easily escape, but he'll show me how to counter what he is doing. Training with him is always a learning experience. However, one of the instructors can be a real pain to roll with. He absolutely will not tap, and will not teach when he is rolling...he gets this 'there is no way I'm going to lose attitude'...and sometimes, he even gets angry when someone puts up a good fight, he'll find an excuse as to why they gave him a hard time...after two years, i have never seen him tap

I've heard a funny story second hand about something like this. I won't name any names, but the while rolling, instructor was being choked by his student and refused to tap. When the student realized the instructor had passed out, they rolled him over and woke him up. When they told him what happened, he asked if he tapped, they said no, so he said something to the effect of "then it didn't count!" and they continued to roll! He was serious by the way.
It's funny, Kurt Angle used that excuse after tapping to the crippler crossface on Raw last week. "If the official didn't see it, it wasn't an official tap!"

Or instructors that make you spar for 45 minutes while they rest and then roll with you. Yeah, some instructors need to put there ego aside but it's not my problem. I hate nothing more than someone says "lets have a light roll" and then they try to rip your head off, if you wanna go hard don't try to give me that light roll bullshit.

If you turned up to my old gym with a t-shirt you didn't do it again after the first time. There was no mercy on them. (ie; the lesson being at the gym. wear the Gi or be taught t-shirt chokes).

I get that just from rolling with students from other schools. We agree to roll light and exchange some ideas (like at a seminars), then he attacks like his life depended on it. I'm not prepared for it and almost get injured. I think that school bragging rights and personal egos also get in the way of personal development (he also knew that people were watching us).

i've experienced that crap too. but the thing i hate the most is usually with guys who are new and usually very big, going all out for about two minutes while you weather the storm. then when they run out of gas and it's payback time, they back up and sit on there ass while waving their hand 'no'. as soon as they get tired they don't wanna go!

You wore a tee shirt to roll in.What did you expect?Dont roll in a tee shirt you want to keep.
We all have egoes,Mine is huge.Unfortunatly.
But you guys went to another level with your rolling and added 100% resistance.Again, nothing wrong with that.
Sounds like both of you were bumping egoes.
Instructors arent perfect. They are people too.Sometimes students and instructors bumb heads.
                  It's no big deal.
I personaly have pissed off every instructor I have ever had. Some stay mad. Some figure its good that you think enough to question everything. Some think you should question everything but them.
Two instructors at the same school can train you differantly and treat you differantly. They are people.
After being tapped by you,he may have gone home and thought he needed to try harder.
You should consider it a compliment to your skills that he thought he had to put out that much effort to tap you.

                    Uhhhh,
Hey Dan, I see a real disturbing trend there.
Unless you've had like only two or so instructors..........
                    you suck as a student.....

                    Sorry, just my observation.........

When we wear T-shirts, we don't grab clothing, it's like submission grappling or vale tudo. That's particularly reasonable seeing as how the health club we train at doesn't allow us to train topless.

When people tap me, I generally thank them or at least say "nice move."

I dont see a connection between being a good student and pissing off your instructor.
                        I am a good student.
                        I am just a bad person.LOL.

                          Bobby Steeles

I have been the big but out of shape new guy. What do you expect? I am coming in new and out of shape and you expect me to roll a long time? That doesn't make sense. The guy sitting up and stopping is better than having him puke on you. I have been in that predicament of coming in new but being expected to be in shape for the same workout the experienced guys were doing. I had to stop or lose my dinner, there were no other options. Maybe you could advise the guy about pacing himself or focus more on light, technique based rolling. I know this can be hard if the guy is particularly thickheaded but it is worth a try.

i'm not complaining about people being out of shape. what i meant was a lot of big guys lacking stamina and technique go "ballz out" and muscle the shit out of you. squeezing your head, elbow/ forearm in the jaw, 100% pressure on you for like the first two minutes. a lot of this stuff is very hard to avoid or escape, it's stuff you maybe just frame the arms and endure, like i said , ride out the storm. then after you've taken all of this guys "@sshole attacks" and it's time for him to take some abuse, he quits and won't get back on the mat. and it's like you said, this type of person is too thickheaded to listen to advise.

If you can tap out your instructor without him letting you, then he shouldn't be an instructor. Unless you're a purple belt or something
