  • BJJ Seminar

Total newbie question: I am getting ready to attend my 1st BJJ seminar and I'm wondering what I should expect. I've only been training about 3 months. Can someone describe how seminars typically work and what I should expect. What type of things should I bring and what should I definitely not bring?

Gi's are not required and I don't think I'll be bringing one if that matters any.

I'd ask my instructor but I'd rather sound like an idiot anonymously on the net if ya know what I mean.

    Thanks in advance...

I've only been to one BJJ seminar and it was fairly casual and relaxed...

The newer guys were put together in a group to work the fundamentals, the more experienced grapplers were split off to work other fundamentals.

    Never waste my money again...

If you don't mind saying, who was your seminar with?

It really depends who the seminar is with, what the topic is, what their teaching style is, and how long the seminar is.

Some people will just bang out moves one after the other. You'll feel like you learned a lot, but the depth and focus won't have been there. You'll have seen a lot and you'll maybe come away with 4 or 5 moves you actually remember enough of to make use of.

Other people will show between 10 and 20 techniques and really go over them. They'll give you time to practice them and ask questions. They'll discuss important points or things to watch out for.

The best advice I can give is to bring a snack, some gatorade and a notebook.

In my experiences with seminars, what usually happens is the host will showcase 2-3 'special' techniques.

In most BJJ seminars, the host will roll with all the audience.

But, it depends on who's the host.
