    What is the national organization governing these 'nationals?' How are qualifying tournaments held in each state and region leading up to these nationals? Any idea of the total number of competitors nationwide? How many in each bracket at the nationals?

      I'm no expert, but I'd say that MCMAP probably gives the Marines an advantage.

        145lbs had 14 competitors
        155lbs had 16 competitors
        165lbs had 16 competitors
        175lbs had 15 competitors
        185lbs had 9 competitors
        200lbs had 8 competitors
        220lbs had 10 competitors
        Heavyweights had 5 competitors

        The USA Federation of Pankration Athlima (USAFPA) is the National Governing body for Pankration. This was an open US Nationals. The States of Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Maryland, Illonios and Okalahoma were represented. The majority of athletes came from California. Many came from the various Marine Corps bases in Southern California.

        This event determined the top seeded athlete for the July 2009 USA World Team Trials. The FILA World Championships has 7 mens weight classes.
        The World Team trials is only open to competitors who placed top 3 in a Sept 2008 to Sept 2009 sanctioned tournament. The 2009 World Championships will be held in Lithounia in Sept 2009.
