I could tell he didn't want to bring the fight to the ground. It seemed to me like Nog's plan for every fight is to lure his enemies into a false sense of security (falling down from a punch, etc.) then pulling off an unexpected sub. Mir expected this and kept waiting for Nog to stand up every time he knocked him down instead of (like most fighters) going in for some ground and pound. In the end, it gained him the win. Nog showed a lot of heart, though.
