  • Grappler Mag: Please get rid of Furey NOW!

Matt Furey writes the most inept, self-promoting bull shit columns for Grappler Magazine as can be imagined. This week he's got an entire article devoted to the wrestling neck bridge and how he can feel chi flowing through him in that position. Filled with blatant plugs for his "book," Furey's column is a shameless advertisement for his "catch" nonesense.

There are good columns in Grappling. Royler Gracie's gi vs. no gi piece was interesting. Kid Pelligrino's evolution of sport bjj wasn't bad. But Furey's rambling garbage about Karl Crotch and 1914 ads for briding exercises set my teeth on edge.

Grappling Mag, get rid of Furey. He is a huckster and nothing more. Its one thing to take Furey's money to let him make a fool of himself showing his beer gut -- I mean combat abs -- ads. But don't give him space to merely plug his garbage.

I'm with you on this one. I've bought "wrestling as a martial art" and it was a complete scam. My problem with mr.furey is that he tries to pass common knowledge as something almost mystical.

          since when...

did americana go from being an absurd, ranting anti-bjj pro-USWrestling fanatic to an a frothing-at-the-mouth lebelle/furey-bashing dodo head?

have I been away that long?

have the laws of physics been reversed also?

Phillyman, get Frank Shamrock's video instead. It's the third video in his series and it covers combat conditioning excercises. I think you can get just that video without getting the set. He is demonstrating the entire workout clearly and swears by it himself. Lifting weights as a supplement and eating a lot will of course help too. Furey uses absurd examples like since gorillas eat only leaves you should too and you will be as strong as an alpha male....or you can be as strong as a chimp if you do my excercises. If you really want to see Furey's stuff get his book for 14.95 instead of the $100 video.

Yeah. He had an article in Black Belt Magazine too. The article was about how great his workout was. It didn't even tell you anything that you could do. Basically it was just an advertisement. It didn't belong to be there as an article. It should have been in the advertisement section as there was no useful information on how to exercise.

But i'm sure the work out itself is good.

Frank shows a lot of plyometric excercises, stuff for quads, abs, arms, etc, mostly derived from basic pushups, squats, but he's really creative with it. And look at him, he is strong and in great shape. And unlike Furey, he competes, trains successful fighters, and let's his work do the talking. Furey is a nobody and should not be writing for any magazine. I don't care if he's the only link to Crotch (even though he's not) and his constant presence in leading magazines is a mystery to me.

                      Mr Miyagi

Hey thanks for the info. I would have been broke and sad if i paid 100.00 for that tape and got nothing out of that. PS any one know of any books with polymetric type exercises Thanks.

I don't think you really need a book or video, though it's cool to have Frank personally explain and perform things for you. Any martial arts instructor and/or personal trainer should be able to come up with a plyometric/bodyweight type of workout for you. You know, sprints, pushups, squats, burpees, high step running, heel slap running, hand stand pushups against a wall, headstands, bridges, push up from bridges, lunges, hip escapes, yoga stretches, the list could go on forever. You should be able to find an athlete type that can help you.

PLYOMETRICS are not something you just jump into! You need to be in great shape BEFORE you start or you WILL injure yourself and/or damage you joints. They should only be done under the supervision of a professional. If you don't have that kind of coin, you're taking a big risk. Some people may be able to handle the physical stress, but how do you know you can if you haven't consulted a pro?
