i have a background in judo, and some jujutsu.. i get together and train/spar with a friend of mine, and have been for a while now.. we've begun working a couple of bjj moves, trying to add grappling to our boxing/lock/throwing practices.. we currently practice spinning arm bar from mount and guard, and escape from the mount..
do you guys have any particular positional escapes that you think are foundational? maybe what i'm asking is too easily answered.. i'm just curious what kind of advice you guys would have for us..
thanks for the help
This is simply for street use, because against a good grappler/submission gu, you'll need to know them all.
However, for street use, escaping a side headlock (on the ground), and side control are foundations.
In addition, learn how to sprawl.

wow...
it's looking, more and more, like i'm going to have to buckle down and start attending a class again. the only bjj classes near me (st louis, mo) cost like, 80 a month or something god-awful like that.. but i suppose i will have to suck it up and pay that.
sigh. see...from reading your replies, i'm realizing i'll just need a teacher to figure out how to develop certain traits.. for instance: when we practice a spinning arm bar from the mount, i can do all the basic steps.. but i know from my judo experience that i'm doing it wrong somehow, as i feel my ass and entire weight lift off of my opponent when i execute it..it's not the fluid roll i think it should be.. if my judo experience were greater, i'd probably know how to do this.. but it isn't...and my spinning arm bar from the mount feels more like a hopping arm bar from a hoppity hop ball.

which isn't going to do me much good in a grappling application, but would be great if i were 5 again.
any more ideas?

Side control and Mount escapes are very important. Generally, if you're just looking toward a rudimentary background in submissions, then find a handful of six or seven finishing holds that you can focus on and be proficient with.
Practice the escapes more thoroughly at this point, however, as the escapes will give you an opportunity to USE the submission holds you're working with.

DON'T GET MOUNTED!!!!!
IT'S EASIER SAID THAN DONE....AVOID GETTING MOUNTED AT ALL COST......WHEN ON YOUR BACK BEING CONTROLED IN SIDE CONTROL..IF YOU CAN'T HIP ESCAPE AWAY FROM YOUR OPPONENT TO A SAFER POSITION.(HALF GUARD) THEN YOU MUST LEARN TO ROLL UP INTO A BALL, ELBOWS AND KNEES TOUCHING TO PREVENT BEING MOUNTED.IT'S MUCH EASIER TO ESCAPE FROM SIDE CONTROL THAN IT IS FROM THE MOUNT POSITION..
