  • Chokes without the gi

In the majority of vale tudo I've watched and experienced, there are very few chokes used other than triangle with the legs, triangle with the arms (side choke) and a rear naked choke from time to time. What chokes do you like to do when there is no gi? This goes especially for when you have top position.

forearm choke? Or just smother them...

I personally like to use a choke performed with the tips of the index finger and thumb putting pressure on either sides of the larynx. The larynx is the throat, in laymen's terms. It is extremely effective without the gi. After all, I have never seen anyone on the street with a gi.

A piece of piano wire kept discretely in your belt makes a very good choking device. With this item and a household paper clip no prison can hold me.

So far I like Shimora's piano wire choke the best.

Thanks for the contribution Tracy Karate. I'm not sure how well that is going to work against a well trained grappler, since it doesn't sound like you've really isolated the head/neck are. I'm not saying it's no good, but if I were to use it I would probably modify it a bit. Gi training isn't irrelevant to self defense though. A gi represents a sweat shirt, a baggy shirt, a coat or any other upper body clothing. I used to think that gi work was useless, until I heard about things like t-shirt chokes and the like.

I'm trying out some ideas using my forearms similarly to how use sticks in FMA stick grappling. I'll tell you all how it goes.

Tracy: It is also effective against comatose opponents and quadrapelegics, as well as infants and arm amputees. However against able-bodied people with comparable strength levels to yourself, possesing one or both arms, I'd highly question the efficacy of your preferred method.

PS-If were going to be technical....

the larynx is not the throat/trachea, but rather the "voice box" (if you wanted to accurately put it into layman's terms).

If you collapsed the larynx in order to restrict the air flow through the trachea, it would result in severe injury to the person inflicted and probably death. Not ideal in most "self-defense" situations unless it was your full intent to kill the opponent. But if you're into prison sex.... what ever blows your hair back buddy!

ALso! In regard to your comment "I've never seen a person on the street wearing a gi"... a gi is meant to be a durable training uniform. Most chokes applicable to a person wearing a gi can be used on people wearing shirts, jackets et. al. -Do most men in your area walk around topless? It would be highly impractical to wear a normal jacket or shirt and have it torn within a single class and have to bring in a new shirt each time, unless you are wealthy but still I'd find it a waste and impractical.

Also(not aimed at tracy), chokes consist of restricting AIR flow through compression. The so-called "chokes" commonly employed in sub-grappling are really strangulations. A strangulation restricts blood circulation through compression of the arteries, not air in the trachea.

I am not here to argue human anatomy, but thank you for the clarification. The effectiveness of this particular technique lies of course in it's executuion. The way you may have been taught or have seen it is most likely incorrect. It has a distinct paralyzing effect to it, definitely not something one would train for sport competition. In regards to the wearing of gis on the street, please tell me where you have seen this? The only time I have seen this was when my academy marched downtown in the Thanksgiving Day parade but aside from that it simply does not happen.

The troll choke is by far the best.

                      Bobby-steeles:
you obviosly haven't heard about my chicken choking skills have you?

                      Gungfuhero:
I can't believe nobody else told you about the guillotine. EX..If someone shoots on you grab there head in a head lock and put that bone under your thumb and on your forearm in the guys throat. If you have it locked and are confident you are going to submit the guy fall into the guard and your legs will give you more than enough leverage to tap him with minimal effort. This can be set up when you are in the mount to let the guy roll you and suprise him if you want to use it on top.
another choke that can be tried in the mount is the over- under choke. do a forearm choke and put your other arm around the back of the guys head and grab your arms. this is alot easier with a gi but still can be used without.

Tracy is talking about the same choke that Hackney used to try and escape from Joe Sons headlock. It didnt work too well so he went to punching Joe Son's balls to escape.Very easy to defend.Just wipe it off.

I know about the guillotine, and I suppose it was implied the whole time but left unwritten. The thing is, the guillotine is very difficult to get from most top positions (ie mount, cross-body, kesa gatame). I'm just curious about what other chokes that aren't dependent on a gi we can come up with that work well from top positions.

Similarly to cradling the head and using the forearm across the neck, you can figure 4 your arms similarly to a rear naked choke but from the front.
