  • tee shirt chokes

How many here practice this and how easy is it to get when you attenpt it?The collar on a gi it alot different than a tee as they stretch alot.Sometimes you may have to get a good wrap around the neck with it cause they stretch so much.
    Any comments?

    Dan,
a lot of the guys I used to train with would cut small slits in the neck of their t-shirts to avoid getting choked with them. Because of that, and because t-shirts are so stretchy, we came up with a way to make them work as well or better than a gi, no matter how loose the neck is. When you place your hand (as an example, I'll say your right hand across his body to his right side, palm up and fimgers in) in the shirt for the choke, use the other hand to untuck his shirt at the bottom and put the bottom seam of the t-shirt (the part normally around his waist) along with the rest of the material on the back into the hand you're using to grab the collar. You should now be holding a huge wad of cloth that won't break no matter what, and you can finish applying the choke just like you would on the collar of a gi. It also works with tank tops and other loose types of shirts, and it eliminates the need for getting a different kind of grip. Play with it and see what you think.

Hmm, Mike I'm going to try that.
      Thanks.

Tell some more. Describe some others that do and don't require pulling the waist of the shirt up. Tell as many as you can. Please.

Mike, that just might work man. Great idea, I'm trying it tonight in BJJ.

So you have a big wad of cloth in your right hand, but what about your left hand?

If you have a wad in the right hand i think you could reach around on the other side and get some of the wad in your left hand.

Also, when you have the wad in your right hand you could do the choke where you grab the collar with your left hand on the same side as your right and and then encircle your left arm around the back of their head.

              But i've never tried these.

You're right, and you're welcome. The left hand just reaches in on the other side and levers, just like it would with a gi.

Another technique a few of us resorted to in the dead heat of summer is carrying a bandana or handkerchief in the pocket. On the ground, you can jerk that puppy out and give it a toss around the back of the guys neck and use it the same way you would use a collar to choke. It's more of a novelty, but it works really well.

I teach the same gi collar chokes during my no-gi classes. The biggest difference is that a t-shirt stretches, whereas a gi does not. So you have to learn to adjust, generally that means grabbing deeper than you would with a gi. You can get in a "groove" with a gi, you have to adjust each time you choke with a t-shirt.

I'm completley ignorant about T-shirt chokes. Describe some others. I like the one that has just been described. What are some other kinds of T-shirt chokes?
