  • Since people like to post their stories about training

A few days ago I rolled with one of my friends that I haven't trained with in about a year. We got into fighting and Jiu Jitsu a year and a half ago and we fell in love with it instantly. Anyway, we'd always train of course not really knowing how; just basically impersenating the fighters. Well, eventually I found a BJJ class and he couldn't join because he was transfering to a University up north. Anyway, I had never beaten him before because he was 6'8.

Now a year later and I'm pretty close to Blue Belt level, and he still can almost tap me out. After a VERY hard 15-20 minute fight, I was finally able to take his back and get the rear naked choke. He looked like a big terantula all over as I couldn't sweep him, or sub him from my guard which is my best aspect. I had him in an arm bar three times from my guard and none of them worked because he would power out of them or just put his weight on me and I couldn't put pressure. He has also gotten it seems like two times stronger because he plays basketball at a real university now. Anyway, have you guys ever rolled with a 6'8 230 lbs basketball player who knew a lot more about Jiu Jitsu then the average guy you can easily beat?

if you were close to blue, shouldn't you have had an easier time tapping your friend?

Not really, do you realize how big he is compared to me? I'm 5'8 160 lbs, he's 6'8 230 lbs. I mean I beat him, but I couldn't roll around or take him down when he would stand up because he's 6'8 and we're in my apartment living room. Also, what I mean by close to blue belt level is that I'm closer to Blue belt then I am to White belt. Do you know what I'm trying to say? Anyway, I have no problem tapping out normal guys who outweigh me and hover over me, but this guy is a different story

Perhaps the guy has been training behind your back. I recently trained with a guy who just took a month off. Before, he was tapping me pretty good. Anyway, last time he came in (after his long vacation) I felt like Rickson. I passed his guard, arm barred him, mounted him, knee on stomach, took his back, oompahed him, did a half-guard sweep. Everything was working. It was back to reality today: I got choked out a bunch of times. But for awhile there . . . .

hookah, the reason i made the comment above was because you said you had been training for a year and a half while your friend has no real experience. even if he is bigger, stronger etc., a good white belt should be able to tap him in a lot less than 15 minutes, especially when striking is not involved.

We've been into fighting for a year and a half, I've been in real JJ training for 8 months off and on

Americana, where do you train? Do you train at Relson's? Just curious, because you're from Hawaii and maybe I know you.

My profile is old. I've been back in the mainland for a while.
