  • BJ Penn defeats Ken Flo

It's late, can't remember, was either 3rd rd or 4th round, BJ finished Ken Flo with a RNC. It was the first time the fight went to the ground; BJ passed Kenny's half guard and went to mount. Kenny gave his back to avoid eating punches and BJ took the RNC about a minute later.

It went down about the way I thought it would. Kenny is a good fighter, but BJ is much better at everything...striking, wrestling, and jiujitsu. I didn't think Kenny deserved to be the #1 contender, he was on a winning streak, but against whom?

Kenny tried the stand-up kickboxing approach, but he ate a couple of huge fists from BJ. He also tried a few takedown attempts that all got stuffed and he ate more punches, I don't know what he was planning on doing if he could take BJ down.

Anyway, it was a good effort by Kenny. BJ looked much more fit than he did against GSP, he actually looked ripped. He seemed bigger and stronger than Kenny. I don't know if it is possible for Kenny to do 145, and take on guys like Brown, Faber, Aldo, and Fabiano, but I think he'd do better there.

Honestly, I think for $45 the UFC on PPV is a ripoff. The fight I was most excited about was Silva/Griffin, which was great but ended very quickly. Most of this one was pretty boring. I think $25 is a much more fair price for a UFC PPV.

I'd agree, but you're not paying for a fixed amount of pain.

You pay $10 to go to the movies and see what is advertised and you still get ripped off because you find out they lied to you and showed you the best scenes from the movie out of context before you even saw it.

I can't say whether $45 is reasonable or not, but you can't say it wasn't worth the money because the fights weren't long or bloody enough.

I think to see Silva and Penn tear it up like they did was worth $45. Not many people called it any other way. Silva Penn all the way...it was going to be about HOW they did it, not just how long they took to do it or how much blood there was.

Ok, it's hard to put a monetary value on this. To pay $45 and then have it be available on the internet to everyone for free the next day is a little annoying though. I still feel like there are so many mismatches happening in the uppermost levels of MMA. Ex, Machida vs Evans, and of course Spider vs Griffin.

I was an MMA fan before TUF. So, to me fights like Griffin/Bonnar don't mean shit. I saw it, and it was like a toughman contest as far as I was concerned. I don't understand the significance of that fight. But people on the economic side say TUF not only saved the UFC, but it put it in the spotlight. I thought only the winner of TUF was supposed to get the 6 figure contract, not a whole bunch of other fools from the show as well. And what does 6 figures mean anyway? There is a big difference between $120,000 and $995,000. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't like what happened to MMA with PRIDE dissolving and the UFC "taking over". I hate the UFC/WEC dominance; it's almost arbitrary as to who gets title shots and who fights who. And Joe Silva is given so much credit for "matchmaking"? Give me or anyone else on this forum his job and it would be so much better.
Crazy to me that Brock Lesnar gets a title shot to be the HW champ of the premier org in the world after 3 pro fights, one of which he lost. Crazy that Waggney Fabiano who has been first in line for a title shot at 145 for so long seems to keep getting passed over, Mike Brown has defended twice already and Fabiano's buddy Aldo is getting the next shot...how does that work?
OK, Nogueira became the interim HW champ when Couture had issues with the UFC. But Couture came back later....so why did Couture fight Lesnar for the title and why did Nogueira fight Mir? The interim champ should have fought the previous champ (Couture), right? Absurd. And now they will fight when it doesn't matter anymore.
Shogun Rua beats a washed up guy old enough to be his grandfather, followed by a guy old enough to be his father, and is then is selected for a title shot against Machida? Whatever!

The fanbase is expanding to include retards too. People with no sense of scale or time...any top guy loses a fight and half the Sherdog forum says they should retire! For example, Fedor has been the top HW for several years and people have been clamoring that it is SO important for him to fight the UFC HW champ. Funny enough, the UFC HW champ seems to keep changing but Fedor remains constantly atop the HW world by beating the toughest HW in the world. Fedor vs Brock is not that important. Brock is the one who has so much more to prove....if he can beat Velasquez and Carwin and 5 more top HW, then he is deserving of fighting Fedor. Until then, the UFC HW title is a joke.

I don't like the idea that champs are insulated...they only fight once a year (twice at most) against the top contender ( who was not appropriately chosen). In PRIDE champs fought in the grand prix and faced whomever was selected as a good matchup for them in regular events as well. Wanderlei and Fedor had to face so many guys. Wandy even fought against HW fighters. I miss PRIDE. The UFC has some good fighters, few good matchups, but the sport is getting less interesting because of the way it's being managed. If the UFC chokes Strikeforce out of business, then it will be even less interesting.

The dominance of the UFC has been more of a market take over than actual quality of Fights take over. Pride i think to most that have watched the sport long enough has alot more heart and emotion attached to the fights much like the real early UFC's. The corporate like take over used to acquire Pride was a foreshadowing of what was to come. The demise of Elite xc although not the best ran operation was a bad deal for mma and only helped to further the rise of the UFC. The scene completely has changed and people will tell you it had to change to grow and to continue. which is not true it had to change for UFC to continue japan mma was doing fine at the time when dana and the bunch took over. When you offer me corporate take over of a mma organization as a cool thing and shows how bad ass the owners and partners must be makes me sick to my stomach. This was mma remember FU corporations and those looking to conduct themselves as such. Dana by all means only did what was best for the UFC not mma and there is nothing wrong with that from a dana point of view hell its his job he is only being great at what he does. And so are lawyers that defend rape'os and child molesters. UFC has a bad attitude towards others growing in the sport which sucks period. It wasn't to obvious when Dana talked tuns of trash on Elite xc because they were shady but bad mouthing Affliction just cause they start a MMA promotion is just lame and then having a pissy fit with fedor and starting to trash Strikeforce that has been great to fighters and fans and great for mma is bad for the sport. But this too will pass this UFC dominance will either change management or change there wannabe casino owning gangster attitudes towards mma like dana always says "this aint boxing" well act like it then.
