Interesting and entertaining series of fights.
Couture vs Nogueira was everything that it was hyped up to be. I'm so glad I got to see this fight between two of the greatest fighters in the sport. Nogueira took the unanimous decision but Couture gave him a damn tough fight. There were great exchanges standing and on the ground, both of them had their moments. I can't believe Couture is 46 years old, unbelievable.
The fight between Demian Maia and Nate Marquardt ended pretty quickly, probably less than a minute. Maia, for some reason, decided to work his standup against Marquardt and paid the price. Maia tried a high kick and took one in the jaw, and fell down stunned. Marquardt pounced on him, but then realized Maia was out. I was impressed with Marquardt for not throwing punches on his fallen opponent. I'm a huge Maia fan and was disappointed that his crosstraining had somehow convinced him that he was qualified to stand against Marquardt, I wish he had shot in right away. I hope he gets back on track in his next fight.
The fight between Brandon Vera and Krysztof Soszynski was a little bit boring, IMO. The Polish experiment looked unstoppable in previous outings but tonight it seemed like he couldn't put anything together against Vera. Vera deservedly won the decision, but he didn't really seem that game either. Before the fight I thought both guys could make title runs but afterwards, I kind of felt that this fight is ultimately irrelevant.
Thiago Silva vs Keith Jardine! I don't know what people on Sherdog were talking about, so many retards over there. Most idiots there said Thiago is the most overrated fighter in the UFC, he's gonna get schooled (or KO'd) by Jardine, etc. No way! The guy was 13-1 with his only loss being to the champ, Machida! Thiago took no damage at all, patiently waited through a couple of awkward Jardine flurries, knocked Jardine down once, and then KO'd him on the second time down, just a couple minutes into the first round. I look for Thiago to make a serious title run now, maybe one more big one against a top 5 guy, then a title shot and rematch against Machida.
Oh, I almost forgot....it was a pleasure to see Chris Leben get choked out by Jake Rossault. I've hated Leben ever since he urinated in some guy's bed in TUF, I don't know why they have a guy like that in the UFC. I loved watching him get toyed with and KO'd by Anderson Silva, and watching him go limp to an arm triangle tonight made me feel all warm and fuzzy too. Why do they promote a guy who urinated in someone's bed? Does that boost ratings? I think Leben is an a$$hole.
