  • BJJ vs. Judo fights

Does anyone know of any UFC or Pride fights with a BJJ guy vs. a Judoka?

The only ones I can think of right now are Royce vs. Remco and Vitor Belfort vs. Joe Charles.

I can't believe Remco couldn't even throw Royce, who weighed like 80 lbs less than him. Aren't judoka suppose to be able to throw much bigger people?

I just came out of the fighter's stable at UFC2 and was standing up in the bleachers to watch the Remco v. Wiet fight. When those elbows came down on Wiet's head I could feel the bleachers vibrate under my feet. Naaaaaaasty.

                  Watchman,
It certainly looked like it hurt. The funniest part was that the announcer kept insisting the Thai Boxer was going to do something big, and then bam the fight is over with a KO.-ED

Yeah, that was funny. Remco himself said he thought he was going to lose that one when they interviewed him after the fight. He was an impressive fighter who schooled a big silat guy for his first fight in the prelims (which has never been shown), and he was a really nice guy from what I gathered in chatting with him the couple of times I ran into him at the training facility they were sending all the fighters to before the event.

The Judoka that Rezo beat was Ben Spikers.

A good example of a Judoka trying to do Judo in NHB is Cristophe Leninger against I believe it was Mezger or another Lion's Den guy. He uses the trunks for a throw, pretty cool fight, and a good example of a guy trying to do pure Judo in nhb.

hey watchman, are you a trainer/manager of one of the fighters? A friend of mine was at that event also. he said the pat smith fight against scott morris was even worse. after the fight i guess scott tried to stand up several times and fell over. I also heard a cool story about Royce at UFC 2. i heard before the Pat smith fight back in the fighters room, that Royces older brother Relson was trying to show royce some techniques and show him a few tips on taking the bigger Smith down without getting run over like scott did. well Royce was being all cocky wouldn't listen so Relson socked him in the eye. If you look at Royce closely before he comes out for the pat smith fight he has a small shiner under his eye, and we all know it didnt come from another competitor. hehehehe

Ryu: Yup, it's me -- the one and only.

Hardcore BJJ: I wasn't really a trainer. David Levicki was a friend of mine at the time and sometime training partner. He scammed me onto his entourage so I could go along and participate in all the action. If you rent the tape you can see my skinny ass for about two seconds doing poon sau with Levicki in the part where they talk about kung fu. I pretty much got a free plane ride and two week hotel stay care of Rorion.

I was 19 at the time of the event and had a fun time seeing how everything came together behind the scenes. The UFC was still pretty much brand new at the time, and it was a cool learning experience. Plus, I got to meet most of the Gracies and all the fighters, walk around inside the Octagon before the event started, and hang out in the fighter's stable.

I actually watched the Morris v. Smith fight from near ringside. Morris looked even worse the next day with his face swollen.

I've got a Rickson story too! When the "Gracie Train" was just about ready to leave the stable and go out to the Octagon for Royce's fight with Ichihara I moved to go pat Royce on the shoulder and give him a "Good luck!" Rickson looked at me and barked "Get away!"

Rickson vs. Watchman: Rickson by TKO using stern language.
