  • Almost ripped my ear off Saturday. Goodbye training.

    Saturday afternoon, some friends and I went to the lake to do some jet skiing and knee boarding. I was riding the knee board, and I tried to jump the wake. When I was at the highest point in the air, the strap over my knee slipped off and the board came out from under me. I hit the water, and as the life vest pulled me back up, the board slammed into the side of my head.

    My ear was split about an inch down from the top, and cut (but not all the way through) another inch. I was lucky enough to have a plastic surgeon on staff who specializes in ears, throat and nose when I got to the emergency room. It took him over an hour, 4 needles full of Novocain, and 19 stitches. It looks suprisingly good considering how it did right after it happened.

    Of course one of the first questions I asked him was, "When can I start wrestling (I didn't think that explain sub grappling was prudent when he was clipping extra cartilage away from my ear) again?" He gave me one of those smug doctor looks, and said pretty much indefinitely. I'm pissed and I'm going to be stir crazy soon, but the very thought of escaping a triangle makes me want to pass out.

    I'll be there on Wednesday to say goodbye for a while, Mousel's guys.

    Uh, why don't you just use some wrestling head gear?

      Headgear moves around and pulls on your ears. I can't even take a shower at this point.

        Damn! I'm sorry to hear about your accident Marcus.

        I was kneeboarding Saturday too. On the upside, better to damage an ear than to loose an eye.

        I know you will heal fast and be back on the mat soon. Plus, if your ear looks all narley when it heals, you'll look menacing at tournaments!!

        Honestly, I'm glad you're ok.

            I do standup training (JKD and Thai boxing), but even that's out for a while.

              That's horrible! Unlucky about the accident, but lucky about the plastic surgeon.

              Maybe you can train more boxing, and thai boxing. I won't hit you in the ear, if you you don't hit me in the face.

                Two words for you, bro......."It'll heal"

                I think most doctors are required to enroll in a "Pessimism 101" class while undergrads. You'll be back on the mat...just give it time.

                    Thanks, guys. I know I'll be back, but summer is the only time I can really train hard cause I'm usually really busy with school the rest of the year.

                      Holy crap! Marcus, this is Britt, the tattooed lawyer guy from Mousel's who moved off a few months ago. Sorry to hear about the injury, bro. I don't want to be a pollyanna, but my MA instructor here was in a car accident a few years ago and was told by doctors he'd have to find a new profession. Today he's just fine. Maybe you won't have to be out as long as you think. At any rate, take care, man!

                        damn brother......feeling for you at this point.....now would be a good time to get a couple books either on triaining or an art itself and dive in when you cant grapple or wrestle....tuff break.......hope u feel better soon....

                          After a couple weeks of rest why don't you go to class and do what you can. Create drills you can do that is not going to bother your ear. This is what great athletes do to get by until they are ready to go 100%. I know it is not full out grappling but sometimes we are forced to find out what we are made of. You decide whether you want to come out of this with a better game you can be proud of or one that slipped away because of your accident. You could do guard work, work combinations, ride a bike, lift weights, a lot of things. Find the positive in all this and go forward and I promise you that at the end of the summer you will look back and feel good about what you did. Good luck with your new short term training routine.
