Catch Wrestling is a crock of BS. Back in the old days of travelling carnivals and sideshows there were the Carnival Freaks. You had the Human Cannonball, The Bearded Lady and the Strong Man.
The Strong Man was nearly always a capable wrestler also and he would challenge members of the crowd to last 5 minutes with him and win big money. He knew a bag of wrestling holds that could lock up the untrained person in matter of seconds. Most if not all his techniques relied mainly on brute strength to work effectively. Men like Gotch trained harder than the average Carnival Strong Man and became more proficient in the art. This wrestling was never known as Catch, it was only ever known as catch as catch can wrestling. The word Catch only came into being after the first couple of UFC's. It appears to be a way of cashing in on the BJJ craze created by the UFC.
If you can bend Quarters in yiur hands and Iron Bars in your teeth then you can probably do Catch as Catch Can wrestling. If you cant then you are better off doing a real art like BJJ.
If anyone is up to speed on catch as catch can wrestling i'd say it would be Matt Furey. I know the guy is full of himself but he has sought out many of the old catch as catch can wrestlers and trained with them or done extensive studies on their techniques.
He even trained for several months with one of the legendary Gotch brothers. I give him kudos for reviving a forgotten art.
I wonder how many other old Human Cannonballs and Strong Men there are in retirement homes around America? Im sure an enterpising guy like Matt Furey will sniff them out if they exist.
I kind of pity these 90 year old men, crippled from arthritis being forced back onto the mat by these ruthless business men.
Who has Tony Cecchine trained with? The only person I ever saw him mention was some local Circus Strongman called Stanley somebody. Whoever he was, he was not in the league of the top catch as catch can men of the day.
I've heard catch guys brag about how they can obtain a submission from any position and that they don't need to be in control of their opponent. But that only seems to work if you're much stronger than the guy and he doesn't know how to defend himself. So, even if you do end up submitting a guy, it doesn't seem to be very efficient if you're gonna be defending against a guy that's stronger or heavier than you...
"seriouly i would like to fight shimora for the internet fighter world titel, and beathim and chop of his fingers and hang them on the mirror of scooter " Duchman at The Choke Zone forum.
Tony C. is bad for Catch?! No way! Tony C. has mentioned Lou Thesz on many occassions...how did you miss that one? Lou was bogus, right? Tony's material is worth checking out. He even has a deal right now that you can buy everything he has to offer for $300! Tony C. only charges $600 to $650 for a seminar...who else does that? I've never been to one, but he also allows you to come train for a week & you can opt to stay at his place! Who else does that? Bad for Catch...no way!
Matt Furey, in agreement that he may be full of himself, has some good information to put out. I'm waiting on the two books I've ordered before making any further assumptions of his material. Very high priced "other" material available.
BJJ people are in for a shock when you check out Tony's material.
Where the F-U-C-K was catch wrestling before the bjj revolution? That's right, it was nothing, which is exactly what it is now, nothing. Furey and Tony are just trying to make money; but where are the SUCCESSFUL catch wrestlers? And who cares about Karl Crotch anyway? Screw catch.
I was almost going to buy the Tone C Catch Wrestling Tapes but I think I may save my money now. I viewed all the clips at www.groundfighter.com and the information seemed to be well presented with a good eye paid to detail. For example on the hold down tapes he covers some positions that we don't usually do in BJJ but that can be effective if they are done correctly like the Head and Arm hold down for example. He shows how it can be done as to not be so easy to escape from. I went to a Roy Harris grappling seminar a while back and he said that Catch Wrestling is a fast loose game that relies too much on athleteism and strength and not enough on leverage and technique but he said combine the finer elements of Catch as Catch Can wrestling with BJJ and you have something really effective. So I was thinking of checking out Tonys tapes but from the posts on this thread it sounds to me like I'd be better off passing those tapes up. What does ever one think? Have you actually looked at those tapes and do they actually suck that bad? I think Judo Gene Le Bell trained pretty extensively in Catch as Catch Can Wrestling. I have his Grappling Master Tapes which are excellent if you want to be a pro wrestler but if your talking about real grappling he doesn't show any effective or realistic entries into any of the moves and a lot of the techniques are purely for show only. How ever Tony says in his clips that he will only show high probablity moves on his tapes stuff that works at least 80% of the time. What's every ones take on that?
groin grab,
this is not realy the place to ask. Most of the people above are trolls, they only diss people and talk sh*t. tape lod and shimora and John Matao are all the same people.
None of those ever trained in catch, and none of them ever will because there to stupid to get out of there trailor park
