  • Sparred a Savate guy...

This week, my training was kicked up a notch in intensity for my upcoming bout. My trainer bought in two of his friends who are Thai boxers as well to help me out. His first friend spent a few rounds with me with the Thai pads and corrected my stance, by telling me to stand on the balls of my feet for more mobility and had my left shoulder slightly out more. He also made me put in more head movement and had my hands adjusted higher, to my temple level, rather than chin level. He told me the fighters that I would probably face kick high alot and even a grazing blow from them on the temple would KO people. I learnt the down angle kick to the legs all over again. If I can master this kick like this, I can surely knock people down with a single low kick!

The other guy was also cross training in Savate and we went into the ring for sparring, it was more controlled and for me to work combinations with the clinch. He improved on it a ton, and I feel alot more confident with it, even with a taller person. His kicks however were friggin bizzare to me. He was MUCH taller than me and to frustrate me, he was using alot of push kicks and variations of it to my knee and lower shin to keep me out of distance. He even landed a axe kick on top of my head! The kicks really found there mark, and even though I was covering up, the kicks had pin point precision and made alot of welts on my chest, legs etc. The feeling of the kicks were alot different because it felt more like a razor swipe than the "heavy bat" of Thai kicks. He also had lot of fakes and followup kicks that made me lose my range.
The more I train, the more I find things to learn. And oh yeah, Im doing SAT classes during the day, they F uckin suck.

    SAT's

About the SAT thing. SAT classes and books are a waste of time. Two of my friends took them, and lets just say they're in community college and I'm at a univeristy. One of them even read one of the books after he took the test, and he did WORSE the second time.

      SAT's

It depends on the class. Princeton review at least used to work - raised my GRE verbal score to an 800. Hang in there.

Maybe your friends just ain't that bright. For me SAT classes helped. One reason is that when I took my SAT I had already been out of school for a while and I needed to review the math (it's amazing how fast math skills go when you don't use them). But I think just getting used to the format of the test helped more than anything. My score on the SAT was at least 200 points higher after the class than it was on the practice test I took before.

            Sweep,

That's because the SAT hadn't even been created yet when you went to college.

SAT's classes - depends on how motivated you are and how much you put into them. They helped me.

Sparring - it just shows that nothing beats controlled, ass-whuppin' exercises to get you ready for the street, or anywhere else.

                Kick ass in both endeavours!

                  Cool!!

                  Hey Yella:

I'm a huge believer in savate. although I've been focusing more on my bjj recently, for my personal preference, savate is where it's at for me, in terms of "kickboxing" range.

I experienced the same thing you did whenever I sparred with my instructor. At first, i thought, it was just his talent that was making savate work.

then I sparred with a savateur from france. holy $hiite! almost knocked me out...and he wasn't even going hard. his precision was mind blowing. the savateur told me he used to fight pro muay thai, then he visited a savate school in france. thinking he could whip the sissy french in their glorified leotards, he got KO'd in 12 seconds by a fouette median (a medium round kick) to the liver. he was "converted", to say the least.

                  keep training hard.
