    interesting article

Who is the great nephew (or whatever) that the article talks about in the "gay atack"?

It's nice that BJJ especially GJJ gets some good press but, as usual, the article ends up painting things in a negative light.

Are Brazilians that bored that they have resorted to gay bashing as a way to keep their skills sharp or are these isolated incedents? I would like to believe Royler's explanation that there are just a few bad seeds. What is the real feeling in Brazil?

Thanks for posting the link Tim.

I was glad to see that article on the front page of the Washington Post. Hopefully the art will get more recognition now.

This was a great article except for gay bashing thing. I mean, people who do that stuff are going to do it weather they know Jiu-Jitsu or not.

Ryan Gracie was the one who attacked the transvestite mentioned in the article. Later, he went running to his uncle Carlos Gracie for shelter. He, of course, denied that the attack was gender related.

            Destroy Homosexual PERVERTS...

I should not even have to say this... All right-minded REAL men know that our Creator COMMANDED us to DESTROY Homosexual PERVERTS. He COMMANDED us to STONE THEM TO DEATH!

Now,if you have a problem with God' s Commandments then so be it.

              Hiyan

What's with Ryan Gracie? I already thought less of him because of the assault from behind on Wallid, but now he's beating transvestites? C'mon, someone should tell him what it means to be a Gracie.

Your god(aka imaginary friend) also supports slavery and killing children for cursing. If you'd like to devote your life to the figment of someone else's imagination then you'll end up hated and in jail.

wasn't there somewhere in the Bible that it is not for men to judge?

and still they perpetuate the lie that Maeda taught him jui jitsu when he was a judoka.

Judo is Jui Jitsu, or was. It replaced most of the older styles, but incorporated some of the better techniques.

I think Jared Extreme is right. People who train jiu-jitsu here to beat people on the street are part of an extemely reduced group that dont train in good academies and even if they've never done jiu-jitsu they would do the same thing. They are just violent, crazy people that exists anywhere in the world. Ryan Gracie is the only gracie that is everytime in those confusions, i dont like him as person but i dont think he teaches that.
Who train in good academies would never just atack someone for no reason i can assure you that.

That guy who spoke for the article saying "Brazilian jiu-jitsu is not about self-defense. It is about the practice of violence," is just a guy trying to show up.
I think he is gay and for some reason hates jiu-jitsu.

                          Those accidents are very few

I think it was a pretty positive article myself.

The news, being what it is, has to toss in some controversy and create some stink involved, but I think the gay bashing thing was incidental and unworthy of much discussion.

What people do after they train at jiu-jitsu is a matter of personal decision and has no bearing on the legitimacy of martial arts.

To me, it is nice to see such a spotlight on BJJ.

1 point though, if moree people of one certain type of MA end up in streetfights than all others together, and I'm not saying this is (the case here, then this would say something about that art and how they think about violence

Personally I think MT has this weird potential because it teaches people to fight way to fast, a 16 year old that can kick the crap out of most untrained people doesn't have the maturity to control it yet.
And here we hae the dillema, you want people to learn how to defend themselfs but they should only use it in defence

This is where traditionalist have felt a responsibility and deviced a system where they first look how determined you are before teaching you how to fight (If a former student of mine would be involved in a fight and be the cause of it, I will feel resposible if he used what I have thaught him)
But that in it's turn makes it pretty useless as a general selfdefence system which can be used by anybody

On the other hand I have the feeling that a lot of MT gyms here have a mentality like, no longer a member of my gym no longer my problem
Like selling a gun to someone you know is an escaped serial killer on the run :As soon as he is outside my store it's no longer my problem

                              Morality vs practicality
