  • Attention: Tim Mousel

    Mr. Mousel,

I have been kicking around my theories on the above subject for awhile with little interaction from the other members of the forum. Do you have lists that outline the answers to the following questions:

What to look for in a Martial Art for self defense?

What to look for in a teacher?

What arts seem to cross train well together?

You have probably answered these questions before, but I have never seen the posts.

    Thanks for you time.

    SZ

P.S. I would like to hear what other people have to say as well.

    Hello,

What to look for in a Martial Art for self defense?

For self-defense, I suggest firearm training, knife defense (kali) and an art that incorporates the following ranges:
    1. Kicking
    2. Punching
    3. Trapping
    4. Grappling

The training needs to address takedowns and takedown defense. Sparring is also very important. Include strikes on the ground while sparring.

What to look for in a teacher?

I always look for their ability to help me improve. It doesn't matter if the teacher is the best fighter in the world if he doesn't know how to help me improve.

What arts seem to cross train well together?

My choice has been to focus on thaiboxing, boxing, wrestling, bjj, shooto and kali for knife and stick. I've trained in many more arts than those but those are the arts I focus most on.

I answered your questions very briefly...I hope you find some of it helpful.

    Tim
