BJJ has many weaknesses, if we are considering NHB/MMA, like many arts. It is a sport with its own rules, which are different to MMA, so of course it will have weaknesses. A rugby player may do OK at football but he won't be the best.

I don't know how old this piece is, because of lot of these points you could have found here two years ago or longer.

Having said that: what a great piece--if you want it all summed up in one place, this guy's done a good job at spelling it all out. Sure, some of us here know most of this already, but hell--the man is right.

I think most NHB BJJers realize this now, as evidenced by their strong performances in the last Pride.

I really like his point about lower-body submissions--a lot of times totally overlooked, when they're practically on a plate if you'd just use them.

Generally speaking, I think most in BJJ have accepted these points, so I'm not really worried too much about anybody overestimating what BJJ can and cannot do.

well i would agree lower body submissions are on a plate, so to speak, but it's the risk of being caught in a bad position if the lock fails which makes them unpopular to bjj guys. but i agree they need to be trained more, even if at least just to be able to defend against them.
i didn't read the article by the way.

              Gothca.

Read the article, it's pretty cool, if a bit after-the-fact.

"In UFC 2, Ken Shamrock tapped the canvas quickly against Royce, but managed to stay in Royce's guard for 35 minutes during their rematch in UFC 5."

Wait I though Ken wasn't in UFC 2? Didn't he have a broken wrist or something?

Yawn!!!!! I don't know many bjj schools that haven't long since integrated these ideas. I guess Ryu just wants to make bjj look bad for some reason (jkd)

It was in UFC I that Shamrock tapped. He was Royce's only competition during that tournry and I think he underestimated Royce.

The SuperFight in UFC V was correctly referenced.

There is a video out from Shamrock detailing his fight career and all the matchups he had up until he went into the WWF. It was interesting to see his perspective. Good think I rented it for cheap though....

Sidder, you really don't know too much about me do you?
I consider BJJ one of the most realistic martial arts out there, and I practice it regularly.

Bobby, at least I don't threaten to smear myself with ice creame when I roll.

A lot of people are still scared of you for that blatently homosexual fantasy.

                            bobby,
Let me explain. You admit to saying you were going to lick an ice cream cone while wrestling. That is a homosexual fantasy. Any "man" who would choose "ice cream cone" over say "beer, nachos, even hot dog" has to come out of the closet and admit he's gay. Never in my life have I heard of a fighter who claims he will "lick ice cream cones" during a grappling fight.
It is blatently gay, and even though we can see you trying to backstep over the issue, there are plenty who looked on with aghast horror and confusion as those homosexual words left your mouth.

Please leave me and any other forum posters out of your strange fantasies.

                            Ryu

                              Fellas,

I wrote that piece in 1997, not yesterday. I'm surprised to see it resurface.
