Places to train in the South Bay?

Anyone know of any good Muay Thai or boxing gyms in the South Bay? I've heard of a place called Boxing Works in Hermosa beach, is it any good?

And to make this grappling related so it doesn't get moved to the boxing forum: Anyone know of places in the south bay to train in wrestling? ARe there any community colleges or colleges, clubs, etc?

I've never actually been there, but I have heard that they do have some good trainers at Boxing Works. They teach boxing, muay thai and grappling as well. They've got some really good guys going up there to teach grappling such as Erik Paulson. But I dunno how big the gym is and how many people you'd have to work with. But hell, it is definitely at least worth a look.

Boxing works

Hey grahf1,

Boxing works is a good place to train. The facility is great more than anything.

I don't take any classes, but I do train there. I use the facility which is great. There are numerous kicking/punching bags, speed bags, and also a ring to compete in.

(The reason I don't take classes there is because I train with another instructor.)

As for Wrestling, Erik Paulson teaches on Wed nights. He is a well known person in shoot fighting.

As for other places: There is South Bay JKD in Hermosa Beach.
(This was Burton Richardson's old school.)

Dan Inosanto's academy is a 20 min drive in Marina Del Rey area.

Also, you have the Machados academy in Torrance. (which I have heard is better than the Gracie's actually.)

There are a lot of choices!

At Boxing Works are the Muay Thai, boxing, and wrestling programs all seperate for each other? Do you pay for them seperately?

Hehe, why don't you call them and find out ? I don't really know, but I have heard that they have one Muay Thai trainer there who is pretty decent. Also, if you wanna take grappling, go to Erik Paulson's Wed night class. I do some of my training under Erik out of the Inosanto Academy and I really can't say enough great things about him. As a fighter he's awesome and as a teacher I personally think he is one of the best around.

Ok. Since I happen to know the rates, I'll give them to ya.
You still should call and double check with them.

$75 is the monthly fee and allows you to take as many classes as you'd like. There are different classes on different nights, and you can take any of them. It's pretty reasonable.

I know that Brian and Tony teach Mui Thai there.

Both used to compete in the ring.
Brian works the front too and he is a good guy. He'll answer all your questions.

South Bay Training.

Does anyone know if they still have an open Gym w/mats at El Camino on weekdays? I think they used to open up the Gym at Harbor college too for all and everyone.

it must've been about 7-8 years ago but they used to open up the gym on weekday nights from like 7-10 and leave mats out for open sparring. it was prettey cool and for free. a lot of guys from different gyms would come by to roll.

My plan is to compete in BJJ, and I want to cross train in wrestling, muay thai, and boxing, but I don't plan on competing in them. Do you guys recommend training at a good BJJ school, and going elsewhere for the other sports?

I know that RAW teaches everything, but do they have a competition team for BJJ? Is it a good one?

Well, in the black belt division at the US Open, Fernando Vasconsuelos won the light weight division, beating two very good guys; Wander Braga and Paulo Guillobel.

I think Fernando is either 21 or 22 years old.
I have a few friends that train at RAW and they are extremely happy with their instruction.
They are refugees from the Torrance Academy.
