  • Brazilian Black Belt Challenge... With Jean Jacques Machado & Joe Moreira Comepeting!

The second edition of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Challenge was held at the Hollywood ParkCasino,in Southern Californa on July 6,2000 orginized by the USFJJ.The feature bout of the night, which also turned out to be the nights best contest, was the Superfight between Joe Moreira and Alexander "Cafe" Dantas.Moreira at the age of 38,was considerd foolish to take this match with Cafe, the 1999 jiujitsu world champion.Moreira, though, never one to back down from a challenge, showed that technique and experiance can overcome youth and scrength by coming away with the victory.

Joe Moreira vs. Alexander Cafe Dantas

This was a classic battle between Moreira's experiance and Dantas youth. The 38 year old Moreira,a judo and jiujitsu master, and Dantas,21, the 1999 World Jiujitsu Champion, both exhibited superior technical skills until the nights controversial ending. The bout was the only bout which both combatants were constantly attacking and counter attacking throughout the contest.

The fight started with both fighters posturing and looking for an opportunity to attack.Cafe, within the first 5 minuts of the bout, suceeded in taking Moreira down twice with double-leg shoots.Moreira, realizing he would have to deal with the energy and youth of Cafe, looked to fight on his feet.Cafe seemed confident in his abilaty to take Moreira down at will.As the fight developed,it appeared,Moreira would not be able to withstand the pressure Cafe was applying.Moreira, though, with his big heart and competitive spirit, refused to yeild easily and repeatidly fought to remain on his feet.

As the two played cout and mouse game of attack and counter-attack,Moreira patiently fought to secure a firm grip. Both combatants circled face-to-face around the mat.As they jockeyed for an advantage, out of nowhere,Moreira applied a perfect Judo hara igoshi hip throw, slamming Cafe to the mat,Pinning him,and then controlling him with a side mount.Cafe quickly fought to bring Moreira to the guard. As Cafe tried to pass,Moriera cought him with an amrlock.Panticking,Cafe tried to escape without success. In desperation a picked up and slammed Moriera to the met.Calearly, this being an illegal move Cafe was Disqualified.

    JJ Machado vs Anderson Goncalves

To the surpise of no one,Machado controlled and won the fight 28-0 not having a single point scored against him.

Nice to see Joe kicking ars again!!!

Did you copy that whole thing manually out of Grappling? Wow! You must have lots of time on your hands.
But anyway, there is a case to made for why the armbar from the guard can be ineffective against a strong virorous opponent who can pick you up and slam you down to get out of it. Shoji did this to Renzo, Trigg did it to JJM, etc. I think slamming should be legal if it's used to prevent a submission.

Uhhh, MA, why are you bringing this up now?

I was there, the match between Cafe and Joe, well, many believe that it was a work, although Joe has adamantly denied it.

I think the armbar from the guard is an extremely effective technique. If you underhook the leg, you won't get picked up and slammed. I'm guessing a lot of people don't practice this in sport matches because the slam is illegal?
Just a thought. Just like passing open guard. It's fine to cheat in a little bit, but in Vale Tudo, you might end up like Oleg getting kicked by Renzo.
