Hounddog,
I'm glad you brought those sweeps up. I was gonna post about Newton sweeping Hughes like that. I have to admit I was shocked to see it work against Hughes a strong wrestler.
I didn't think those BJJ sweeps would work against a strong wrestler even with someone of Newton's ability doing it. It was a beautiful thing to see.
Also what do you guys think of that fights ending? Was Hughes out on his feet? The announcers said he didn't realize he had won. Newton said Hughes dropped because he went out. I have to admit it kind of looked that way.
The first one: the sweeper is using open guard and the sweepee is on their knees sitting down on their feet. They are not raised up with their toes pointed on the ground.
From open guard, the sweeper rests one hand(say left for this example) on the ground behind themself and to the left.
plant both feet on the ground, and raise hips, and twist to the left. if the sweepee doesn't defend quickly enough(essentially tackling the sweeper by wrapping their waist and driving back toward the mat) they will be swept. You will finish with your head in the same direction as it was prior to the sweep. you and your opponent should be parallel and adjacent to the postion you were in before the sweep. I know this isnt clear. maybe there is a video clip out there somewhere??
For reference, Frank attempted this on Tito in their fight and might have pulled it off. I can't remember. I think either Fabiano or Serra busted this one on their opponent too.
the second sweep was another basic sweep that you can find on the gracie basics i believe.
from guard, sweeper reaches under opponents leg ( say right arm and opponents left thigh in a hooking motion.) at the same time sweeper is pivoting toward the left as their right leg slides up toward their opponents upper lat/armpit.
Sweepers left leg goes to the floor and essentially sweeps the opponent at their right leg that is resting on the ground.
these four things happen at the same time:
sweepers left leg is 'sweeping' toward the right
sweepers right leg is lightly pushing toward the left
the right arm is guiding the opponents left leg up and over.
the left hand is controlling opponents right arm so they cant post and prevent the sweep.
all the while, the opponent is very tight to you.
i know these are lame descriptions but they are basic sweeps that you would learn in the first six months of training. So if you've spent any decent amount of time in jiu jitsu class you will know this already.
I don't think Matt would of won that way if he wouldn't of walked to the fence...and about the reversal that Carlos Newton put on Matt, it was the best I've seen in the UFC. I don't see how Carlos Newton thought he had choked out Matt because he wasn't even choking him, he was just trying to keep from falling. It looked like a neck crank but it was doing NOTHING!
Yeah I really enjoyed those sweeps. I have never seen the one with teh posted arm. I guess I must have missed that day of instruction in class. It sure got a lot of OOHS and AAHS from the crowd though.
