I'm not impressed. Fool contact what? Most of the "jujutsu" i was taught is not the stuff you can do with your friends. It's just not right to break people like that. What I see looks like ramped up randori. Or run of the mill MMA... Groin kicks aside.

This topic has been done to death. Do a search. BJJ came from Judo which came from JJJ.

The confusion comes from the Gracie family calling what they do "Jiu-Jitsu"

The Gracies named their art Jiu-Jitsu because Esai Maeda called it Jiu-Jitsu . . . oh, and so did Kano in the early days when he referenced his art as Kano JuJutsu (see The Complete Kano Jiu-Jitsu , (New York: Dover Publications, 1905))

And as anyone who has actually done the research can tell you, the Judo of 1905 was nothing like the Judo of today.

So, if you want to rip on the Gracies for using the name their teacher used then maybe you ought to take it up with Kano's gost because it was the same name Kano used when he first established his art.

I'm the one who bumped it because I was reading "WHOS ONLINE" and I saw that people were viewing this thread. I only bumped it to mention the youtube vid of "Full contact jujitsu in poland" The vid shows a good representation of JJJ.

Of course it grew out of Judo, but to reference it as newaza is not oly insulting to Maeda and his history in JuJitsu and Judo.

Judo kicks ass and I've enjoyed the hell out of it when I have had the chance to train it but BJJ is not Judo newaza. There are a number of similar techniques but if you actually have some experience in BJJ then you just cannot make that claim.

Look at someone like Dave Camarillo, who is a fairly decent Judoka, and how he references the two arts. How about Olympian Rhadi Ferguson and what he does with the arts? Both men praise BJJ for how much it has helped their newaza but niether would agree with tanto's assertion that BJJ is Judo newaza.

doesn't sound too insulting to me

i suppose i can see how you could see it as insulting to refer to it specifically as judo newaza because it sounds like the equivalent of saying bjj is just half of judo, but i don't think that's the claim being made. but i do think you would be hard pressed to come up with more than a handful of techniques used in bjj that didn't come through the filter of judo. that's not to diminish bjj in any way, i certainly don't feel that judo is diminished for it's techniques coming from jjj.

I believe that the truly dedicated students of BJJ are proud of their Judo heritage, I am. I love training with every Judoka I get the chance to train with. The Judo heritage isn't the issue, especially since Helio Gracie is/was a 6th Dan (http://www.judoinfo.com/kimura2.htm). The referencing of BJJ as "Judo newaza" is the issue and it is incorrect and yes I do believe tanto was attempting to slight BJJ, Helio, and the decades of work and development by the rest of the Gracies and their students in his post.
