  • BJJ efficiency

I've been studying BJJ for about 5 months now. I'm not very good at it but I remember almost all the moves my instructor has taught me. Not suprisingly, everyone in class taps me out pretty easy when I spar with them. They have all been studying longer than me. But I sometimes worry that not being efficient on mat will lead to not being efficient on the street, when I will need jiu-jitsu the most.
My question is, how long does it usually take for someone to get good at jiu-jitsu, atleast to the point that they no longer feel intimidated by certian people or situations?

there is no set time schedual. It depends on ones self.
    Just keep going to class.
The transition that helped me the most was getting my legs out and back up to my knees after escaping.
I would escape, but still stay on my back. This is not good as you are dealing with someone who just takes another position or goes right back to where they had you.
Staying on your back is only going to work if you are good at taking subs from there one right after another.
But as a beginner, you dont know that many and cant flow from one to another fast enough to keep your opponant off balance and on the defence.
You are going to have to actually wrestle for that position.
Mat time is going to help along with the commitment to get out from under.
You may get other advice from better guys than me.But,this is what I had to do.

It can be hard to measure your improvement when always rolling with people better than you. However if you've been constantly wrestling for 6 months to a year when a new guy comes in who has not done it before you'll be able to see how much you have improved.

As Crazy Dan has said, it just depends on YOU.

There isn't a time table for which you can say at this point, you will be confident ofyour skills.
Sure, you can go out and get into a few bar room fights or street fithts to see if you've attained the skills. I know that a few have probably done this but this is stupid.
I remember Fabio Santos told us that at the blue belt level, you have the skills to take about 90% of the people on the street. So, you have the skills, but that doesn't mean that you will properly execute your skills. It just means that you have the tools. What you so in a threat situation depends on your reflexes.
To be honest, unless you've been training in other martial arts, even a year might not be enough for you to be confident in your skills but I bet if you are put in a situaion where you are forced to defend yourself, you will do OK.
If you can, go compete in a tournament. That is one way to measure your skills in a controlled environment, where there is no danger, yet will test how you do against an unknown opponent.
When you train constantly with your fellow students, you get to know their game, what they are good at. But going against someone in a tourament, you have no idea what they know and what they are capable of.
Just be patient and keep training and your confidence level will be to the point you are seeking.
When I walk the streets, I am very confident that I can take almost anyone, yet I have to be careful that I am not so cocky that I would get in over my head in a "street" confrontation.

Soho is right...Try and find a friend or new class member who knows nothing and I have no doubt you will be wiping the floor with them. I thought as you do fora while, but I talked a friend of mine into a roll in the lounge one day, and I was amazed at what I could do to a heavier guy, who was actually a good athlete as well. Wait and see...

you are depending on jujitsu too much....if your taking bjj wait until it goes on the ground...

you should take boxing or muy thai for top fighting...and then bjj for ground work if it takes you there...

sometimes a right cross to the face is all you need to stop someone...

            lol...

i know cause i've done it and still do....
            suprise it the key....

You're absolutely right, when it comes to self-defense, there are no rules.

I have always wanted to try this:

Guy walks up to start some stuff. Talk for a bit and if it looks like it's going to escalate, walk away stating "I don't want to fight you."

If the guy pushes the issue, state again, "I don't want to fight you" while walking away, again.

If the issue is pushed further, state for a third time, loudly so that all witnesses can clearly understand that you have stated "I don't want to fight you"for the third time. If that does not solve the issue, then unleash on the guy and don't stop until he's out or some group pulls you off.

I think that would cover you legally. What do you think?

                      you are thinking too legally..

see i'm L.A. and people get killed and leave the scene daily.
i defend myself in a store or a mcdonalds or a park...i'm not staying around for the police to ask questions...

a fight should only last 30 secs....anylonger you got to go...
cause the law is the law...

think about it...unless he's trying to rob you and you are a 100% victim then you can.. but the law states you "LEAVE" the situation, get to the nearest phone and call them...

                      NOPE..SORRY....i'm beating and fleeing...

Absolutley. The cops are a joke 90% of the time. LAPD will just show up and shoot everybody anyway.

Up here we are quite a bit slower, so you have to play by different rules.

I don't have any street experience, so I can't speak to that. I don't get into trouble out and about.

I don't have anything that anyone would want and I don't go looking for trouble, so people leave me alone. I don't go to bars very often and when I do I spend most of my time making fun of the bouncers....

You can get good enough to beat some big guys pretty damn fast in BJJ IMO, make sure you got a good teacher & play with it & I think you'll be surprised how well it works, this art is the real deal.
