  • I'm glued to the floor

Does anyone else find themeselves going to their back too often and then playing heck getting a better position? I'm a pretty big guy (240 pounds) and my instructor has showed me many ways to escape a cross-body, but I always seem to wear myself out trying. Anyone know any special tricks to solve this problem?

    When Bikers Attack!

I went to your website, I hope that's not you in the blue spandex!

You guys have to go see how "not" to defend yourself on MRPoopy's website!

As for your technical question, we use "military rolls" to shift the hips out from under the centerline, but we use this in combination with strikes as an escape.

    A military roll defined:

On your back, your shoulder blades are down, you bring both knees up and your feet are flat on the ground next to your rear. You lift your hips slightly off the ground and take small steps to one side until you can rotate your hips through and have both knees on the ground.

For example, if you are moving to the left, your left should "touch" your left elbow on the mat, and the next step with the right leg would be "shooting" over the left shoulder. This rotates the hips through and you should end up with both knees square on the mat, facing down and hands and knees.

Advantages: this is an effective move to get off of your back. If your opponent blocks one direction, you change and go the other way.

Disadvantages: This works well when you are mounted, but not at all if someone is in your guard. This gives your opponent your back. This is a difficult move to pull off without striking, and against a skilled grappler who can float and take your back.

It's a good self defense, get the heck off the ground move. And I have used it a time or two in Judo against someone who had never seen it before. Heath Herring used it (basically the same move) in the last Pride over and over again to escape the mount.
