ALI the movie

Anyone see ALI yet?
Any comments? Good bad or indifferent?

I'm reading Ghosts of Manila right now. A great book about Ali-Frazier. Y'all might want to check it out.

I fear this fim will be much like Ali's carrer: overrated. I'm not much into the sport of boxing anyhow, but I do like Will Smith, so I am still deciding on wether or not to throw away the eight dollars.

I don't buy Will Smith as Ali, I defenately don't want to here him yelling in that phoney voice of his trying to make his voice sound deeper than it really is "THE CHAMP IS HERE!" the movie looks lousy like a typical Hollywood rendition of something over exaggerating and over dramatic. I'm saving my money.

Ali was one of the most influential figures of the twentith century, both in the boxing world and the political world.

He changed the sport, and the world...

Personally, I love to see someone with a big mout back it up, and boy did he back it up.

If it's about Ali I think its worth seeing.

Talk about determination - that man truely undersood the concept of kokoro.

Well, I saw the movie. I thought it was OK. The movie ends with Ali-Foreman so if you are expecting to see the Thrilla in Manila you can forget about it.

Unfortunately, this movie (along with folk like mushinmaster) seem more intent on making Ali out to be something other than he was. Ali had no insight into the political landscape anymore than he did about electrical engineering. His mouth was basically a talkpiece for the Nation of Islam when it wasn't out promoting himself.
People need to wakeup and realize that Ali was a great boxer....nothing more, nothing less. It's too bad that he gets so much respect poured on him for actions that basically set the stage for boxing to become dominated by guys like Don King. What he did to Frazier was inexcusable and anyone who thinks he was some great champion of the black cause should look at his treatment of Frazier to see that Ali's only cause was Ali.

hmmm....as an aside, I just caught this on the 'net. Apparently Ali finally apoligized to Joe in April.

Ali's only purpose on this earth was to become the greatest heavy weight boxer of all time - no doubt. He wasn't going to let anyone stand in his way.

Some of the things he did on the way changed people's thoughts and actions, whether that was the intendended or unintended effect.

He did more in this world than just box, even if he didn't mean to, even if he didn't want to.

i'm not exactly sure why, but i found this statement particularly funny. coupled with the guy's "handle" and the fact that he posted this on a BJJ/MMA... essentially a fight forum was quite entertaining.

mushin: I think it is a bit much to say that Ali was the greatest heavyweight of all time. I can think of other heavies that could deserve the title as well. Frazier, Marciano, Tyson, Holyfield for example. As fast as Ali was, I think Holyfield was faster in ihis prime AND hit harder. Besides the rope-a-dope strategy is overrated. Sitting on the ropes taking punishment is not the smartest way to fight. A good inside fighter (Frazier, Tyson) can put an end to that style real quick. Frazier did.

Saw the movie last night. It was an okay movie. Just a decade or so in the life of Ali, beginning when he won the heavyweight championship from Sunny Liston at 21 or 22.

The boxing scenes were very realistic, not like the Rocky movies. I read somewhere the attention to detail by the director was borderline anal.

Prior to watching the movie, I thought Ali spent time in jail for refusing to enlist. I was surprised to learn that the supreme court overturned his conviction.

The movie was so so. If you already know a great deal about his life, you won't learn anything new. I'd give it a 3.5 stars out of 5.

Lastly, Will Smith's voice was a little bothersome throughout the movie. It didn't sound natural.
