  • How Long Do You Train

I'm interested in how long your average workout is, and what your goal is.

Right now I'm a student, so school sports come first. My training right now is 2hrs of practice, 1hr of running, and 1hr of weightlifting or other strength training, a little bag work for stress relief.

When the season ends 2hr practice will be replaced with two hours of martial training.

It sure must be nice to be young, not HAVE to work and just do what you want to do.

I guess I can do that too, but I would have to live on the streets, stand on a freeway off, asking for food and money.

I think 2 hours of exercise/training/etc. a day is enough to get you in great shape.

I've definitely turned up the intensity,I hope to start fighting by the end of '02.I was at 330lbs a few months ago,but I'm already down to 280 and have been building a lot of muscle.I probably put in about 3 hours right now a day,one hour on Kickboxing/Boxing,one hour on Weight training, and another hour on Ground work spread out through out the day.

I plan to start doing a lot more as soon as the construction of my "Gym"(A small building on my property ) is done.I work as a daytrader,so I have a lot of time to workout etc.

Do you do any running or something else to supplement weight training, or just pump?

330 down to 280?? How tall are you?
I'm still trying to break up past 185

I'm in the 5'9 -5'10 range,I'm not exactly sure. But right now I do sprints and boxing/kickboxing,wrestling,and jiu jitsu for cardio, but I'm mainly focusing on building a lot of muscle at this point(along with my martial arts training),at the rate I'm currently going I will probably meet my goal of 245lbs by mid summer, hopefully.I will go into intense cardio training when I hit the 260lbs mark.It feels great to get all that weight off so far,I was agile and as quick as some of the 200lbs guys I work out with when I was at 330lbs,now with the weight I've lost I't feels unreal how quick I am now,I can't wait to reach my 245lbs goal!!

3 hours is ideal for me for a hard practice and I take a few breaks in there to keep the practice long. My favorite BJJ practices were at Renzo's where they were sometimes people there training for 3 hours straight. Me and about 5 guys stayed there late sparring on one of my visits and I got to watch one of the best guys in our group spar with Rodrigo Gracie afterwards and Rodrigo just fluidly controlled and submitted the guy that just controlled & submitted me several times and I was amazed at the jiu jitsu ladder and how good people can get at this stuff. I remember Rodrigo when just beautifully hopped out of this guys guard and in a transition quickly took the guys back and just switched sides of his rear naked choke on the guy like a machine gun.

Tech practices I like to go 1.5 hours, on hard cross training practices I like to grapple an hour and hit pads or spar standup for 30 or 40 minutes. It seems if I start a practice striking I get into a "striking" mindset that is hard to get out of and just grapple so I like to hit pads last.

Is that just MA training or are weights laced in there with running and stuff?

My training lasts one hour a night, with an off night on days that I have my daughter. I usually start with about 15 to 20 minutes of warm up and then follow with light movements, accuracy strikes, street defenses, and that sort of thing. I finish my workout by running through techniques we've focused on with my partner full force, as if I were really defending myself but without hurting him of course. Before I call it a night I will also run through a few light stretches. I am also getting into a little yoga which is doing wonders for me. My energy is up and I am feeling much more relaxed since beginning. It is also easier to sleep at night.

Partner work is the best training exercise.
Do you do any working out on top of that, or just MA training?

I do incorporate some stregnth exercises, but I do not lift weights. They are too restricting when it comes to speed and flexibility. I train as a martial artist, not a bodybuilder. Martial training makes up the majority of my workout.
