Hey maybe you dont like Tracey ( I personnely dont like his idea) but hey just calm down. You sound like a yougn karateka who try to be tough but it dont work.
Thank you guys. It's nice to see a few friends. I don't think Joe is a bad guy, just misguided and young. He stated that he is new to the arts so I am confident that with a good instructor and willingness to learn he will grow out of a lot of the adolescent barriers that gangs put on people in his position in life. Regardless of what has been said about me by him, I am not angry.
I am sorry to burst your bubble, but wrestling and boxing are not martial arts. They are no more martial arts than are bodybuilding or hockey. Muay thai may be considered by some to be an art, but it still remains as a sport with strict rules, protective equipment and a referee.
Yo, who do you think you are, classifying what a martial art is and isn't.
Martial = of, pertaining to, or concerned with war or the military life
art = a branch of learning
WEBSTER'S DICTIONARY
At West Point, United States Military Academy, where students are trained to become commissioned officers in the United States Army, cadets are put through a rigorous athletice program, including, as cornerstones, boxing and wrestling.
Any learning that is related to war or combat can be classified as a martial art.
The lessons that go along with the arts can be learned - or not. It's all up to the practitioner.
In japan, they have a martial art for just about everything - there was horsemanship, archery, using the jutte - a police weapon.....the list goes on and on.
Kung Fu = chinese boxing
Muay Thai = Thai boxing
ITS ALL A IMO THING BRO, IMO

MARTIAL ARTS?LOL MUYTHAI IS AN OLD MARIAL ART,BOXING AND BJJ JUJITSU..
Mushinmaster, if you want to categorize things in that broad of a sense anything can be labled as such. If you want to be literal, on the other hand, US soldiers in Afghanistan are not kickboxing the enemy, they are shooting and bombing them. So the answer it seems must lay somewhere in the middle. Taking a heavily opininated stance on an issue does not prove a point. Ask Mike Tyson or Garlan Rulner if they are martial artists and see what they tell you.
Yes, bombing and all that stuff can be classified as a martial art under that definition. Troops go to a school to learn that stuff, the knowledge is recorded and passed down...like the traditional martial arts.
It's all an opinion thing, that's what I was saying.
I've talked to wrestlers who consider it a martial art and those that don't. Same with boxing. Obviously you don't consider them one. That's okay. I do.
Weren't the origins for todays oriental martial arts founded in Egypt, where archeologist have found hierogyphics of wrestling on walls - then it diffused to India, then over to Asia? Have you ever heard that theory? I think it was on Discovery Channel's Origins of the Martial Arts.
Didn't muay thai find its origins in the thai armies?? that wierd Penjack Silat or something?
The only valid argument I've heard is that to be classified as a martial art, the art must teach with it a moral doctrine, such as bushido, chivalry, hwarang-do - and from what I've seen, although it does not have the traditional roots - wrestlers are made to clean the matts, pick up all the garbage, shake hands before and after matches, be nice, they learn determination, self-disipline - all that and an apple pie.
Boxers I think are some of the most self-driven and hardest working martial artists out there - how many hours do they train, how far do they run? There is a sport side to boxing and wrestling, and there is a martial side - just like there is do and jutsu. It's all the same in my eyes.
i take both wrestiling and karate at the moment. i do consider wrestling a martial art, and those that do the sport and donnot consider it a martial art somehow feel that boxing isn't an MA as well. not suprisingly, these are the people who wont take what they've learned on the matt (/ring), and put it into a fight. those that do consider these two to be MA, always seem to perfrom better in fights.
look tracy, i do respect karate, as well as other MAs, and i have taken TKD, JJ, and sambo in the past. all of these have the same impact on a fight, including wrestiling, as the other.
if you feel that wrestling and boxing are not martial arts, please do me a favor and define what you feel is martial art... i garuntee you'll have to be more then picky to find the words to avoid connecting the same definition with wrestiling and boxing.
an' joe, lay of the karate bashing. 'cause i garuntee my shidoshi will drop tyson anyday
