Howdy all,
Been a few years since I've been in a BJJ class, and am looking forward to resuming my training soon. Little trivial question, though.....
Does a white belt start out with a balck bar, or does he have to earn that? I know Rickson's association no longer uses the bars ( just stripes of the next belt color ), though I am confused by the statement on his website ( concerning the belt standards ). And I quote ( from http://rickson.com ):
" Rickson Gracie International Jiu-Jitsu Association recognizes and certifies its members on all levels and ranks, which include White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black colored belts. Each belt has 4 degrees, with the exception of the Black Belt, which has 10 degrees. A total of 9 belt tests are offered by the Association. The first level is the White Belt, Phase 1. All other belt tests consist of two phases for each level. The Association evaluates each member's level of effectiveness, Jiu-Jitsu's first priority, as well as their technical skill. "
Now I'm a little confused, it says that each colored belt has 4 degrees, then says that there are two levels to each belt. Now maybe I'm just a total dumba** on this, I'm just a wee bit confused.
By the way, does anyone know why Rickson did away with the bars? Thanks in advance.
