A black belt is the one I wear to hold up my pants that matches my black shoes!

Seriously, no one should ever worry about what belt they are. You should be concerned with your progress but not for "status". I believe that the black belt is the starting point for learning. You now know the basics, now you need to learn how to apply them in EVERY situation. If you know 5 or 6 moves and make them yours, you'll be much better off than knowing 1000 moves and not being able to apply 1.

My old Tae Kwon Do instructor (8th Dan) used to tell me that he wished he could just cut the bullshit and give everyone that wanted to train a black belt......that way they can start focusing on training instead of a status symbol.

He also used to say that a black belt (in any martial art) is when one makes the transition to being considered a serious student.

Hmmm, after 8-10 years of hard training in BJJ when I get my black belt

You beter call me more than " a serious student "

Why? What is more serious than being a *serious* student?

In BJJ a blue belt is someone who has the basics down. I've heard the Blue belt called the knowledge belt in that Blue belts have learned most of the tech and concepts. The difference between the skill of a blue vs a black is huge even though they both know more or less the same techs. I'm not really into belts though I don't mind them in BJJ

naw ..i do like the high kicks but it's hard to do those kicks if someone can shoot for your legs and bring you down..but it's still good to know..

                  hehehe
im sure pete williams will tell you differntly after he smashed big mark coleman in the face with a high kick. And certaintly, no one would say that mark can't take anyone down.
