Grappling in a point sparring tourney? That sounds weird. I mean, it would be so easy to just bop somebody on the back of the head when they go for a shoot...totally ineffective in MMA, but a valid point in a sport match. And it would be hard to maneuver into the clinch for a judo-style hip/shoulder throw.

I would venture to say that the 2 -- point sparring & grappling -- will be separate aspects of the same event.

Ah, gotcha. When you said that grappling was going to be "introduced into this point-sparring tournament" I thought you meant the kumite itself and not just the tournament.

I'd like my instructor to create a grappling event at our next karate tournament, but none of the other karate schools around here have any groundfighting in their curriculum...I daresay I'd wipe the floor with a karateka from another school of roughly equal weight.

But I think he just likes rolling around with sweaty guys in fancy pajamas.

You might be surprised how many karate schools are incorporating grappling into their schedule. I'm not saying they are making it part of the written format, but some offer it on the side. At the least, you can talk it up with the other participants at your next tournament.

These days anyone with any sense has included something that at least looks like bjj into their curriculum. A perfect example is Tiger Shulman's Karate a big chain on the east coast. I remember several years ago a friend of mine Went to TSK. They did grappling but not really bjj. They would tell the student things like "squeeze the guy with your legs when he is in your guard to break his ribs" I got a good chuckle out of that one. I explained to my friend that big strong people have squeezed me as hard as they could in their guards many a time and while it is uncomfortable, my ribs didn't break and I didn't tap. So unless your Arnold and your fighting an old lady with calcium depleted bones this probobly won't work. You just tire yourself out.

Fast forward to the present. Now days TSK seems to have picked up it’s grappling program, whenever you go to a tournament you find tsk guys there who can do well. You know times have changed when the McDonalds of martial arts starts changing its ways.
