  • What can I expect my first day of training?

    im gonna start training with a local camp hopefully this friday. im a newbie, total newbie. took karate a while ago, but i didnt believe it would help me so i quit. anyways, just hoping to get some insite on how my first class will be. i know it wont be anything like karate where you stand behind someone and yell and punch/kick at the same time.

    so, how was your first day of class like? feel free to explain guys

    First time at class

    I remember my first class very vividly. We started out with a warm up of about 30 minutes. Mostly crunches, variations of crunches, and a lot more crunches. We then went over some very basic stuff (I was the only guy in class that night). I learned different ways to mount, and the ultimate tie up (side mounted with the guys arm across his own neck). After that the fun began. The instructed commenced kicking my worthless ass for about 15 minutes. You will more than likely get your ass kicked too, but don't let that get you down. That just shows that BJJ's effectiveness. Guys that had been coming to class for only a year or so could wipe the floor with me when I first joined, but not now.
    If you're out of shape right now, don't let that hold you back from taking classes. I've lost about 25 pounds since I started. It gets you in shape.

      there is no typical BJJ class. Or even a typical martial arts class that can be universally applied.

      I've trained at 3 BJJ schools. I've visted several others.
      Even at my present school, we don't have a routine that is followed in every class. Sometimes, we get our butts handed to us with death cardio, trying to kill you with cardio, to break you down and build you up.
      Other times, it's light stretching, lots of drills and lots of different types of sparring.

      But typically, in our class, we do around 100-400 sit ups, and a variety of running, push ups and stretching. Then we go into drills and techniques and then lastly sparring.

      Unless you are in great shape to start this new class, you will probably be winded in the beginning.
      Because of work or injuries, if I have even laid off a week and come back, I am out of shape and kind of off in my timing.

      With this first class, just try to hang and if you feel really winded or dizzy, STOP!
      No need to show that you have huevos. that can be for another day.

      You need to learn to crawl before you can walk,
      learn to walk before you can run.

        damn i think i would die if i had to do 400 situps. or even 20 push ups seems impossible for me . im so out of shape, to be honest, ive never been in shape. but the instructor said that it doesnt matter cuz he'll get me into shape hehe. oh well, wish me luck. we start off with boxing i guess. thanks for the replies.

          sit ups

          We usually don't do sit ups but we do plenty of crunches. I could do about 30 when I first started and that made me feel like i was going to puke. I can do a few hundred now.

            Strong stomach muscles are very important in Jiu Jitsu.

            I HATE to do any type of sit ups, but I realize that having these muscles toned is so important in many situations on the ground.

            There are many ways to keep them in shape.
            I try to sit on the floor when watching TV and keep my head up off the floor, keeping my stomach muscles tight.
            during commercials, I try to do some sit ups and stretching.

            Instead of just sitting on the couch, try to do some stretching and some light exercises.
