  • PROGRESSION IN BJJ

This question was posted before, but since it was erased, I will post it again:

How do you gauge your progression (as in starting out) in BJJ? I know it's not always the same with everybody, but someone had it broken down the last time, so basically I'm talking in general. What I mean by gauge, I mean what does a newbie expects on his first month in regards with his ability to grapple? what about on his second month, his third month, his fourth month, etc., etc.? This is based on someone going to class twice, and maybe once in a great while three times a week? Any feedbacks based on experience?

Month 1: You can tap your wife 50% percent of the time and annoy your coworkers and friends with constant requests to show them a cool new submissions you've learned.

Month 2: You can tap your wife 100% of the time. Your coworkers avoid talking to you and your friends have begun to be too busy to return your calls.

Month 3: You can beat most average Joes in a street fight and caluses are starting to develop on your toes. The skin on your knees and elbows has become abrasion resistant.

Month 4: You can beat almost any Joe on the street your size or smaller. You learned your lesson and will not tell the people at your new job that you do jiu-jitsu. All your new friends are at the jiu-jitsu club.

Month 5: You leap upon fresh new whitebelts with glee and can avoid getting tapped by most blue belts for at least a minute or two. Now you feel comfortable enough to put a small Bad Boy patch on the leg of your gi.

Month 6: You are a wise, old battle-hardend white belt. You correct the technique of new white belts with authority. There is no more space on your gi for patches. After rolling with blue belts you whisper "I almost had him" to the other gassed out white belts sitting on the wall.

Month 7: You know you should be a blue belt but aren't just because the blue belts at your academy are exceptionally better than anywhere else and your instructor has much higher standards than others.

        That's funny!

I've heard and can relate to most of them! LOL! I seem to be stuck in the 5th month. Hopefully, that will change as I gain more experience.

        Peace

          JB:

Glad to see your sense of humor is returning.

          Don't quit, man!

If you quit, who would I have to argue politics with?

            He's not gonna quit...

I told on him to a mutual friend. This friend sent a very motivational email to him. I read it and then trashed my own email since it would be impossible to follow up after that one.

            Peace

              funny!

That's is some funny sh*t John! After each one, I was smiling more and more, 'cause each one was so true! At least in my own case

After finishing the list, I had to ask myself, "does he know HighMount?"

So that's why nobody's talking to me. All these time I thought I had that "martial arts aura of invincibility" hanging around me; I guess not! Thanks, J.B.

                    Ha! Thanks guys.

I'd like to hear how it goes from there.

                    Month 12?

                    Year 2?

                    Year 5?

                    Year 10?

                    Year 25?

Good one John!!! But seriously, I'm just starting at groundfighting, no formal classes, just someone asked me to show them stickfighting, so I asked them to show me grappling.
